Volleyball Wins Round 1 Of Battle of the Ravine for 2011 Season

ARKADELPHIA, AR- On Tuesday night, the Ouachita Lady Tiger volleyball team (10-8, 1-3 GAC) traveled across the street to face off with rival Henderson State (4-12, 0-4 GAC). The Lady Tigers were looking to rebound from a conference loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday and collect their first GAC win in the history of the program.

The Lady Tigers dominated the Lady Reddies from the start, winning the match in three sets. The first set ended with a score of 25-23, a close call but still a set win for the Lady Tigers and momentum going into the second set. As the second set began, the Lady Tigers again forced their will upon Henderson, winning 25-19 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set saw much of the same, as the Lady Tigers took the third set of the match and swept the Lady Reddies, allowing themselves to come back with a rivalry win, but more importantly, their first conference victory of the season.

The Lady Tigers were led by junior Megan Askew, who finished the match with 17 kills and an assist and two digs. She also collected an assisted block in the match. Another notable player for Ouachita was junior Allison Frizzell, who continued collecting a ridiculous number of digs, with 24 in the match. Senior Lexie Hegi led Ouachita in assists, collecting 27 total assists during the match. Senior Kristyn Howk also contributed 21 digs of her own, helping the Lady Tigers take the victory from the Lady Reddies.

Henderson State was led by Ty Lindberg, who collected 14 kills in the game, as well as Cheyenne Derr, who collected 14 digs.

The Lady Tigers return to action on Friday, when they travel to Weatherford, Oklahoma for a match-up against Southwestern Oklahoma State University. That game will begin at 6:00 p.m.
