PLAINVIEW, Tex.- The Ouachita Tigers wrestling team continued their run of difficult duals this weekend, traveling to Wayland Baptist to compete in the Texas Shootout. The Tigers took their first two duals of the weekend, defeating Wayland Baptist by a score of 26-18 and then going on to defeat Newman University by a score of 29-18 before finally falling to Grand Canyon University by a final score of 34-8.
"I think it was a good test for us this weekend to get on the road and wrestle three duals in a 4 hour span," said head coach Kevin Ward. "A lot of our matches were closer than they needed to be, but we found a way to win some of those close ones which is important."
Josh Myers and
Dallas Smith both posted impressive performances at the shootout, both of them going 3-0 and scoring bonus points for the team in each match that they competed in.
In their match with Wayland Baptist, the Tigers won six of the 10 matches, including wins by fall for C.J. Hays and Smith, while Myers posted an impressive 19-4 technical fall victory over Wayland's Victor Thomas en route to a 26-18 victory for the team.
When they faced off with Newman, the Tigers again won six of the 10 matches. Smith again recorded a win due to fall while
Bobby Williams recorded a pin as well. Myers victory was a major decision, winning by a final of 12-4 and again helping the Tigers to a dual victory.
The Tigers match against Grand Canyon University was a little rougher than they would have liked, only winning two of the 10 matches, with the wins coming by Myers and Smith. Myers recorded a major decision in a 10-0 win over Grand Canyon's Vince Herrera while Smith also recorded a major decision in a 9-1 victory over Brett Sanchez.
After the shootout, the Tigers have one dual remaining and their record currently stands at 7-6 in dual events. They will travel to the University of Central Oklahoma for a re-match with the Bronchos on February 11. That dual will begin at 2 p.m.
