Chigede and Tigers defeat #15 Northeastern

Box Score

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The Ouachita Tigers men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to five games on Wednesday, defeating the 15th-ranked Northeastern State RiverHawks 3-2.

The Tigers jumped ahead early in the match, scoring two goals in the first 17 minutes. The first goal came on a corner kick by Brandon Hom in the 16th minute. Hom's kick reached Gideon Onguti who took a shot that was blocked by Northeastern's keeper Jackson Biles. The rebound off the shot bounced to Tinashe Chigede's feet, and Chigede finished the play to give Ouachita a 1-0.

One minute and thirty seconds later, Ouachita extended their lead to 2-0 on a header by Logan Hampton that came on a cross from Chigede.

Before the first half ended, in the 40th minute, the RiverHawks decreased Ouachita's lead to one and a goal by Juan Peralta. The half then came to a close with the Tigers leading 2-1.

In the second half, the RiverHawks offense came alive, as Northeastern attempted 19 shots. Ouachita's defense stepped up to the challenge, however, and David Henley recorded five, second-half saves.

Despite focusing on defense, Ouachita's offense added one more goal in the 57th minute. The goal came on another corner from Hom. After the corner, the ball was deflected numerous times in the box, before Chigede headed in his second goal of the match.

Down 3-2 late in the second half, the RiverHawks were awarded a penalty kick after a Ouachita foul in the box. Northeastern's Jordan Schmoker netted the kick, bringing the RiverHawks within one with ten minutes to play.

In the final ten minutes of regulation, Ouachita's defense prevailed, and the match ended 3-2 in favor of the Tigers.

Chigede finished with two goals on three shots. He also added one assist, bringing his season totals to six goals and four assists. Logan Hampton scored his fourth goal of the year against the RiverHawks.

David Henley recorded eight saves throughout the match and allowed only two goals.

The Tigers are 4-0-1 in their last five games, outscoring their opponents 14-6. The Tigers (5-5-1) will host Union University on Thursday, Oct. 16, as they try to win their third straight match. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
