Muleriders hand Tigers first GAC loss

Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tigers fell to 1-1 in the Great American Conference on Saturday, losing to the Southern Arkansas Muleriders 75-59.
 
The Muleriders struck first and never looked back, as Ouachita could never retake the lead in the game. The Tigers attempted multiple runs in the first half, but they were quickly shut down. Despite keeping the lead throughout the half, however, the Muleriders never led by more than 10.
 
Southern Arkansas (4-2, 3-1) pulled away in the second half, and eventually claimed its largest lead of 22 with 4:37 remaining in the contest.
 
The Tigers struggled shooting throughout the game, netting only 35.8 percent from the field and 21.1 percent from three-point range. Ouachita currently ranks 23rd in the nation in field-goal percentage defense but allowed Southern Arkansas to convert on 44.4 percent of its shots from the field.
 
Ouachita also lost the turnover battle 15-9, uncharacteristic of the Tigers, who rank fourth in Division II in turnover margin. Despite losing the game, the Tigers out-rebounded Southern Arkansas 44-38. Ouachita ranks first in the GAC in rebounding margin.
 
Tirrell Brown led the Tigers with 16 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. He also recorded five rebounds and a season-high five blocks. Justin McCleary also scored in double-digits with 10 points.
 
The Tigers (5-2, 1-1) will travel to Nacogdoches, Texas for a game against Division I Stephen F. Austin University on Sunday. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
