Lady Tigers come up short in Monticello

Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Ouachita Lady Tigers fell to 3-9 in the Great American Conference on Thursday, as they were defeated by the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms, 73-52.
 
The Cotton Blossoms (9-8, 7-5 GAC) developed an early lead after netting 56.7 percent of shots from the floor in the first half. The Lady Tigers posted a field-goal percentage of only 45 percent in the half also committed eight turnovers.
 
After UAM claimed a 17-point lead with 5:22 left in the first half, the Lady Tigers pulled within 10 on a 7-0 run. UAM's Courtni Gibson converted on a last-second layup to end the half, giving the Cotton Blossoms a 38-26 lead.
 
In the second half, the Lady Tigers opened with a 5-0 run and later pulled within five after Katie Kapler recorded four consecutive points. With just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, however, the Cotton Blossoms pulled away with a 19-5 run, giving UAM its first 20-point lead of the contest. The Cotton Blossoms would hold their lead until the buzzer sounded with UAM ahead 73-52.
 
The Lady Tigers struggled to comeback after halftime, as they recorded a 37.5 percent field-goal percentage in the second half. The Cotton Blossoms maintained their lead behind 46.2 percent shooting in the period.
 
For the game, Ouachita committed 15 turnovers, compared to UAM's seven. UAM capitalized on the Lady Tigers' mistakes, scoring 14 points off turnovers and 12 second-chance points. The Cotton Blossoms also dominated inside, scoring 16 more points in the paint.
 
Breanna Harris led the Lady Tigers with 17 points and four assists, and Kapler followed with 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Katherine West recorded nine points on 3-4 shooting in 39 minutes of play, and Kori Bullard added eight points and seven boards.
 
The Lady Tigers (7-12, 3-9 GAC) will host Arkansas Tech on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Bill Vining Arena. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
