Late fourth-quarter rally not enough for Lady Tigers in season opener

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Ouachita Lady Tigers opened the 2015-16 in Bolivar, Missouri on Friday, falling 81-78 to Lincoln University. Ouachita was led by junior Bria Caldwell's 21 points in 24 minutes of play off the bench. Starters Breanna Harris and Katie Kapler scored 15 and 13 respectively, with Kapler adding a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Tigers and Blue Tigers were tied 15-15 coming out of the first quarter. Ouachita outscored Lincoln 20-12 in the second quarter to take an eight-point lead into halftime. Caldwell accounted for eight of the Lady Tigers 20 second-quarter points, including two three-pointers. Morgan Miller and Taylor Bowles also knocked down three-point shots, to help Ouachita shoot 40% from beyond the arc in the second quarter.

Trailing 35-27, the Blue Tigers of Lincoln opened the second half with a 12-3 run to retake the lead, 39-38. Harris scored on a fast break off a steal and Kapler followed it up with a three to put the Lady Tigers back up by four, 43-39. Lincoln scored the final six points of the quarter to retake the lead, 57-51. The Lady Tigers shot only 35% from the floor in the quarter, while Lincoln shot 42%. Both teams capitalized on their trips to free throw line in the quarter. Ouachita made 16-18 attempts, while the Blue Tiers went 22-26.

Down 11 points with three minutes left to play, the Lady Tigers went on a 10-2 run to get within three, 75-72 with just under a minute to play. Bowles hit a three and added two free throws to score five of the Lady Tigers 10 points in the run. With 33 seconds remaining, Caldwell hit two free throws to get Ouachita within one, trailing 77-76. Harris followed suit with 18 seconds left to play. After two free throws put Lincoln back on top 81-78, the Lady Tigers had two attempts to tie the game on three-point attempts but were unable to convert.
