Tiger fall in 89th Battle of the Ravine, 21-17

ARKAELPHIA, Ark. – A late third-quarter touchdown by Kris Oliver pulled the Ouachita Tigers within four points of the Henderson Reddies, but a scoreless fourth-quarter by both teams ended the 89th Battle of the Ravine with the Tigers falling 21-17.

Oliver finished the game with 89 rushing yards to give him 1,176 yards for the season, the fourth-most yards by a Tiger running back under Coach Knight. His rushing touchdown was his 19th of the year, the most ever by a freshman running back for Ouachita and one shy of the program single-season record.

Field position and time of possession were the story in the first three quarters. Henderson scored on their opening possession of the game after going 84 yards on 13 plays, taking six minutes off the clock. The Tigers answered with a 74-yard drive of their own that ate nearly six minutes off the clock.

Quarterback Austin Warford and Oliver used their legs to move the Tigers down to the HSU 37-yard. Warford hit Evian Hill for a 14-yard completion to get the Tigers just outside the redzone. Warford ran it in a on a first and goal from the seven yard line to tie the game, 7-7.

In the second quarter, Reddies quarterback Dallas Hardison hit Mark Czaus on back-to-back receptions to go up 14-7 with 8:26 remaining in the half. Ouachita's Warford orchestrated the next Tiger possession, moving Ouachita down to the HSU eight yard line. Cole Antley connected on a 25-yard field goal to make it a 14-10 game. Henderson had an opportunity to extend their lead at the end of the half, but Reddie kicker Houston Ray missed a 42-yard attempt wide right.

Both offenses came out swinging to start the third quarter. HSU took a 21-10 lead on a 15-yard touchdown run by Rodney Bryson. Ouachita again answered the Reddies scoring drive with one of their own, this time moving 90 yards on 13 plays. 30 of those yards came on back-to-back personal foul penalties called against Henderson State. Kris Oliver did the rest, moving the ball down to the HSU two yard line and scoring on a first and goal to cut into the Reddie lead, 21-17.

The remainder of the third quarter and the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter saw both offenses stall. Each team was forced to punt on their next four drives. The Tigers final possession started on their own 42 yard line with 6:51 remaining. The Tigers went three and out and punted down to HSU 10 yard line.

The Reddies were able to convert on three third downs on their final possession on run out the lock for the 21-17 win. Ouachita is now 40-43-6 in games versus Henderson.

Austin Warford finished with 143 total yards and a touchdown. Kris Oliver finished with 118 total yards and a touchdown. Senior Evian Hill had two receptions for 35 yards.

Senior Mike Williamson finished with 10 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Alex Myres had nine tackles and one tackle for loss. Waymon Johnson Jr and Demetric Jennings each had a sack for Ouachita. As a defense Ouachita finished with seven tackles for loss as a team.

Ouachita finishes 2015 with a record of 7-4 and complete their eighth-straight winning season.
