ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Behind 13 saves from Lauren Llanes, the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers defeated the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm 1-0 in the opening game of the Great American Conference season on Thursday.
Despite just one goal in the 90-minute match, both offenses dominated as Southern Nazarene (3-4, 0-1 GAC) took a total of 19 shots while the Tigers took 17. The Crimson Storm took 12 shots in the first half, nine of them on goal. Llanes stopped all nine, however, to keep Southern Nazarene scoreless.
In the second half, the Tigers out-shot the Crimson Storm 8-7, including Bryson Rial's game-winning goal in the 84th minute. The goal came on a deflection from Southern Nazarene's keeper, Natasha Fuentes.
Ouachita then prevented Southern Nazarene from attempting a shot in the final six minutes to earn the conference-opening victory.
Rial finished with three shots, including two on goal. Haley Hatcher led all players with seven total shots, while Alisa Trejo and Marley Zochert each added two shots on goal.
Llanes' 13 saves are the second most in her career at Ouachita and are a career-high in a shutout victory.
The Tigers (2-4, 1-0 GAC) will travel to Alva, Okla. on Thursday, Oct. 1, to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
