MONTICELLO, Ark. - Behind a 20-point second half from Tirrell Brown, the Ouachita Tigers defeated the University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevils 66-63 on Monday, giving Ouachita its seventh straight win.
The Weevils (6-11, 4-7 GAC) led for 18 minutes of the 20-minute first half, but a three-pointer by Lakee Westbrook tied the score at 28 at the halftime break. Westbrook led the Ouachita with 10 points in the period, followed by Brown with eight.Â
The Tigers (9-8, 9-2 GAC), who are first in the Great American Conference in three-point percentage, were just 2-11 from behind the arc in the first half. Ouachita dominated inside, however, outscoring the Weevils 20-8 in the paint.
UAM took the first lead of the second half, but Ouachita quickly took its first lead of the half on a three-pointer by Westbrook. The Tigers then held their lead for the next 15 minutes until Brown gave Ouachita a 62-49 lead, its largest of the game. With 1:24 to play, however, UAM started a 7-0 run that pulled the Weevils within two points. Justin McCleary knocked down a free-throw though, and Ouachita stole the three-point victory.
Brown's 20 points in the half came on 9-14 shooting from the floor. Westbrook followed with eight points.Â
For the game, Ouachita posted a field-goal percentage of 41.8 percent. UAM netted 45.5 percent of shots from the floor but were just 5-17 from three-point range. Brown finished with a total of 28 points and seven rebounds in just 27 minutes. Westbrook added 18 points and five boards, while David Berete recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists.Â
The Tigers have won seven straight games for the second time in two seasons. Ouachita posted a nine-game win streak during the 2014-15 season.
The Tigers are currently first in the GAC in free-throw percentage, three-point percentage, rebounding defense and steals. In conference games only, Ouachita leads the GAC in scoring offense, field-goal percentage, three-point percentage, rebounding margin, offensive rebounding percentage and steals.
Ouachita has completed the first half of conference play. The Tigers will host Oklahoma Baptist for their next game on Thursday, Jan. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.Â
