WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Five Tigers scored in double figures and held Southwestern Oklahoma State to 21 second-half points to earn their second straight Great American Conference win by a final score of ,73-62.
Tirrell Brown led the Tigers with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Justin McCleary knocked down three three-pointers and finished with 15. The Tigers improved to 4-2 in Great American Conference play.
Both teams started the first half with hot shooting. The Tigers were hitting 63 percent from long range and found themselves leading 18-15 after three-straight three pointers, two from
Mahlon Martin and one from
Lakee Westbrook, with just under 13 minutes left to play in the half. An 11-2 run put the Bulldogs back on top later in the half.
Ouachita's outside shooting turned cold late in the first half. Trailing by eight with under two minutes left to play,
Aitor Lopez-Breton and
Tirrell Brown scored inside to cut the Southwestern lead to two at the end of the half. Ouachita trailed at halftime 41-39.
In the second half, Ouachita was unable to find their range from beyond the arc and found themselves trailing early. The Tigers started forcing the ball inside and slowly began to take over the game. The Tigers scored 22 of their 34 second-half points in the paint. Carven Holcombe led the Tigers with 11 points in the second half on 5-7 shooting from the floor.
A tip-in by Westbrook tied the game, 48-48, with 15 minutes left to play.
David Berete pulled down a rebound and went coast-to-coast to give the Tigers a 50-48 lead. Berete's bucket started a 10-3 run and the Tigers would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. They would hold on for the 11-point win and close out their Oklahoma road trip with a 2-0 record.
Eight Tigers scored in the game.
David Berete and
Lakee Westbrook each scored 10.
The Tigers return to Bill Vining Arena on Thursday, January 14. They'll face the Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
