Antley's leg lifts Tigers over SAU in overtime thriller

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After connecting a 49-yard field goal to send the game to overtime, Cole Antley made good on a fourth-overtime field goal from 36 yards to lift the Ouachita Tigers (4-3) a 40-37 win over Southern Arkansas (5-2) on homecoming. Kris Oliver rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown and Kendrick Henderson blocked and returned a first quarter field goal 74 yards for a touchdown. Elijah Jones led the Tigers with 20 tackles.

Trailing 3-0 in the first quarter, the Tigers scored their first touchdown of the game via special teams. SAU's Bradford Grems had a 36-yard field goal attempt blocked by Kendrick Henderson. Henderson scooped up the ball at Ouachita 26 and ran 74 yards for the score. The first quarter ended with Ouachita leading 7-3.

The Muleriders opened the second quarter with a touchdown run by Karonce Higgins to take a 10-7 lead. Ouachita answered with a 10 play, 67-yard drive that culminated in a 21-yard field goal attempt from Cole Antley. His first goal of the day tied the game at 10-10. The two teams exchanged touchdown drives on their ensuing possessions. Kris Oliver's 56-yard scamper ended with him somersaulting into the end zone to elude a touchdown-denying tackle. The run tied the game at 17-17 with just over five minutes to play in the half.

Southern Arkansas added a touchdown in the second quarter to lead 24-17 at halftime.

The third quarter belonged to the defenses. After allowing 309 yards to the Muleriders offense in the first half, the Tigers' defense held SAU scoreless in the third and allowed them only 90 yards of offense. Ouachita forced SAU to turn the ball over on downs to open the quarter inside the red zone. SAU's next two possessions ended in punts. The Tigers entered the fourth quarter trailing 24-17.

On the second SAU possession of the fourth quarter, Ouachita's Xavier Johnson picked off Barrett Renner's pass and returned 18 yards to the SAU 39. Five plays later on a second and 14, quarterback Lucas Reed found Allie Freeman for a 22-yard touchdown pass to tie the game with 5:49 remaining. It was Freeman's fifth straight game with a touchdown reception.

SAU answered with a 70-yard drive and a 27-yard field goal from Grems to give the Muleriders a 27-24 lead with 1:30 remaining in the game. Lucas Reed guided the Tigers down to the SAU 32 with two seconds left in the game. Reed went 3-5 on the drive for 42 yards and had one carry for 12 yards.

With time running out on the clock, Cole Antley drilled a 49-yard field goal to tie the game and send it into overtime. In the first overtime period, Ouachita's Shun'cee Thomas carried it from 10 yards out to put the Tigers up 34-27. SAU scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass to tie it 34-34.

In the second overtime period, SAU's drive ended on an interception by Jordan Jones at the Ouachita 3-yard line. He was tackled at the Ouachita 32 to prevent the pick six. The Tigers took over and drive down to the SAU 4 yard line. Antley missed left and the game remained tied 34-34.

In the third overtime, Antley made good on a 34-yard field goal and the Muleriders answered with a 33-yarder of their own. The game remained tied heading into the fourth overtime at 37-37.

SAU went on offense to begin the fourth overtime period. After driving down to the Ouachita 18 yard line, SAU's Grems missed from 35 yards as the ball banged off the right upright. The Tigers took over at the SAU 25 and moved the ball to the SAU 19. Cole Antley split the uprights from 36 yards to give the Tigers the 40-37 win.

Antley finished with four field goals, including three from 30-plus yards. In the overtime period, Shun'cee Thomas rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Elijah Jones finished with 20 tackles, the highest single-game total by a Tiger this season. Devin Price added 17 tackles in the game. Ouachita's defense finished with five sacks, including two by LaFoy Smith.

The Tigers will travel to Monticello, Ark. next Saturday, Oct. 22 to face the Weevils of Arkansas Monticello. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
