Tigers drop two in doubleheader

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Ouachita Tigers softball team fell in the final two games of the weekend series with Southern Arkansas University. The tigers fell 9-0 in game one and 7-0 in game two. Kelly Powell went 2-3 in game two and recorded an assist in the fifth on a throw from centerfield to home.

In game one, Ouachita's Kate Lacina and Emily Acuna recorded both of the Tigers' hits in the game. Both singles came in the bottom of the second inning, but the Tigers were unable to bring them home. Marissa Butler held SAU to one run through the first two innings, but allowed four in the top of the third. Halley Ryburn entered in relief, pitching 1.2 innings and allowed three earned runs. Kelsey O'Brien pitched the bottom of the fifth inning in relief of Ryburn.

Ouachita made a couple of outstanding defensive plays in the game. Sarah Johnson made a quick recovery on a wild pitch and was able to get the ball back to Ryburn for the tag at home to end the top of the third. In the top of the fourth, Lacina fielded and single in right and threw out an advancing runner at third to end the inning. The Tigers would drop game one by a final of 9-0.

In game two, the Tigers were held scoreless on four hits, two coming off the bat of Kelly Powell. Powell doubled to right to lead off the first inning and singled through the right side in the bottom of the sixth. Powell made the second assist of the day by a Tiger outfielder, when she threw a runner out at home from centerfield to end the fifth inning.

Marissa Butler entered the game in relief and pitched a very effective 4.1 innings. Butler allowed only one earned run on four hits and struck out six.

The Tigers would fall in the final game of the series by a final of 7-0.
