Tigers stop skid with series sweep of Reddies

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Gabby Gonzalez drove in six runs on three hits and Kelsey O'Brien earned a save and a win in relief as the Ouachita Tigers took both games of a two-game series from rival Henderson State. Ouachita defeated Henderson 5-2 in game one and 8-7 in game two. The wins gave the Tigers their first sweep in conference play this season.

In game one, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead on a one-out single to center field by Gabby Gonzalez in the top of the second. The hit scored Macy Nantz and Daniella Brantley who lead off the inning with back-to-back singles. Neither team could get runs across over the next three innings, stranding a combined seven base runners in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

In the top of the sixth, Gonzalez came to the plate again with runners on and delivered another two-RBI single to center, this time scoring Kaylie Roberts and Delaney Bono. Ouachita added another run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-0 lead over the Reddies. Back-to-back singles by Kate Lacina and Sarah Johnson led off the Tigers' half of the seventh. Lacina scored on a RBI groundout by Kelly Powell.

Starter Macy Nantz exited the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh leading 5-2. Nantz, who earned her fifth win of the season, scattered six hits over 6.2 innings. She struck out three and allowed two runs, both earned. Kelsey O'Brien entered the game with the bases loaded and forced a groundout to end the game and pick up her first save of the year.

The Tigers bats stayed hot to start game two. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, Ouachita scored six runs to take the lead. The Tigers loaded the bases to start the inning on two walks and a double by Delaney Bono. Kate Lacina drove in the first run with an RBI single to right. Halley Ryburn followed with another RBI single to right to put Ouachita up 2-1. 

After a Reddie pitching change, Kelly Powell doubled down the left field line to make it a three-run lead for Ouachita. Sarah Johnson would clear the bases with the final two-RBI single of the inning, giving Ouachita the 6-1 lead. 

Henderson State responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, cutting the Ouachita lead to two. They added one more in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game. Henderson State tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth and regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Starter Marissa Butler left the game in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on and no outs. She went four innings allowing 10 hits and was charged with six earned runs, Butler finished with three strikeouts. 

Kelsey O'Brien entered in relief in the fifth and found herself trailing by one after the sixth inning. With two outs in the top of th seventh, Macy Nantz drew a walk to start the Tiger rally. Daniella Brantley followed with a single to right field. A fielding error allowed Bono to reach first and the load the bases for Gabby Gonzalez. Gonzalez singled to right center, scoring pinch runner Chelsea Wilson to tie and Brantley to retake the lead. 

O'Brien closed out the seventh inning by retiring the Reddies in order, two via the punch out. She went three innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits and earned her fourth win of the year. 

The Tigers enter this weekend's home series against Northwestern Oklahoma State with a two-game win streak.
