ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Down seven with just over three minutes to play, the Ouachita Tigers' men's basketball team scored 10 straight to take the lead and hold on for the 74-70 win over the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State.
Lakee Westbrook led the Tigers with 18 points and hit the game-tying three with 1:38 left to play. Carven Holcolmbe added 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. The win improves Ouachita to 5-4 for the season and 3-2 in GAC play.
The Tigers shot 63 percent in the second half, going 17-27 from the floor, including 5-11 from beyond the arc. The Ouachita perimeter defense also stepped up in the second half, forcing the Rangers to shoot 25 percent from the three-point line in the second half after making 4-5 attempts in the first. Ouachita controlled the glass, out rebounding Northwestern Oklahoma State 33-24, including 12 off the offensive glass.
Mahlon Martin scored 13 points and had five assists for Ouachita and
Jontavis Willis added 10.
With Northwestern leading 32-31 at halftime, the two teams swapped baskets for the first 10 minutes of the second period, with no team gaining more than a three-point advantage. Northwestern Oklahoma State opened up a seven-point lead with 3:06 remaining. Down 68-61, Ouachita's
Justin McCleary started a 10-0 run with a made jumper at the 2:44 mark. Holcolmbe threw down a dunk on the next possession off the dish from Westbrook. Westbrook's three tied the game at 68-68 and Martin knocked down a three to put Ouachita up 71-68. After a layup by the Rangers' Austin Klug, Westbrook answered with a layup off a crossover to extend the Tiger lead to three. Holcolmbe sank a free throw with three seconds remaining to secure the Tigers win by a final of 74-70.
The Tigers return to action in Bill Vining Arena on Saturday, Nov, 7, versus Southwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
