SEARCY, Ark. – The Ouachita Baptist men's soccer team defeated Oklahoma Baptist 4-3 Friday evening in the first round of the Great American Conference Tournament.
Tinashe Chigede scored three unanswered goals to help Ouachita fight its back from a 3-1 deficit. The senior came away with his first goal of the match off a free kick right before the end of the first half. Chigede headed in the equalizer during the 60
th minute on a corner kick, with Abraham Lazo picking up the assist.
The Tigers and Bisons played into overtime, where Ouachita found the winning during the 107
th minute of play. Chigede completed his hat trick rebounding a shot deflected off of Oklahoma Baptist's keeper and placing the ball into the right corner of the net. Michiru Forbess earned the assist on the winning goal as his shot was deflected toward Chigede.
Ouachita fell behind early in the match as the Bisons hit in the matches first goal during the 3
rd minute. Blaine Hickman quickly tied the match at one with a goal in the 12
th minute. Hickman rebound his own shot off the crossbar and placed the ball past the keeper for his fourth goal of the season.
Oklahoma Baptist worked its way back in front just three minutes later and increased its lead to 3-1 with just four minutes remaining in the first half.
As a team, the Tigers were outshot by the Bisons 21-18, but placed 10 shots on goal compared to Oklahoma Baptist's eight. Ouachita keeper Edward Pacheco saved five of the eight shots on goal, shutting the Bisons out during the second half and overtime periods.
The Tigers will face the winner of the Harding and Southern Nazarene match in the conference final on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. in Searcy, Arkansas.
