WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Drew Harris raced 51 yards for a fourth quarter touchdown run that gave the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers the breathing room they had been looking for against Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday night. Harris' touchdown gave the Tigers a three touchdown lead, and they added another late score to register a 38-10 win in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
It had not been easy. The Bulldogs of SWOSU (1-1, 1-1) tied the game at 10 with 10:22 left in the third quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Trent Dennis, but Ouachita's
Allie Freeman returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards to the Bulldog seven yard line.
Drew Harris scored three plays later and Ouachita (2-0, 2-0) led the rest of the way.
Harris ran six times on the night and scored touchdowns on half of those carries. His first score erased a 7-3 deficit for Ouachita with 1:00 left in the first half. His work in the wildcat formation came at the end of a 45-yard drive that featured heroics by quarterback
Austin Warford and Freeman. Warford converted a third and eight from the Bulldog 43 with a 24-yard run. On the next play he connected with Freeman for a completion to the 3, setting up the touchdown run by Harris.
Warford added to the third quarter lead with a 34-yard run of his own, and
Brockton Brown scored the final Ouachita touchdown with 3:17 left in the game.
Cole Antley contributed the first points of the night on a 25-yard field goal with 5:09 left in the first quarter, and he was a perfect five-for-five on PATs.
Warford led the Tigers in rushing with 79 yards on only 8 carries. He completed 13 of 20 passes for 118 yards with no interceptions. Harris netted 67 yards on only 6 carries and caught 4 passes for 65 yards. Freeman had 5 receptions for 40 yards.
Shun'cee Thomas and
Kris Oliver combined at running back for 69 yards rushing.
SWOSU's Casey Freeman accounted for 291 yards on 24-40 passing. He had one interception. Karltrell Henderson led all rushers with 98 yards on 20 carries for the Bulldogs. Sheldon Wilson had 66 yards on 13 carries and had the only TD for SWOSU.
Ouachita was outgained in total offense. The Tigers had 350 yards to SWOSU's 452, but the Bulldogs were only 5 for 16 on third down. Ouachita was 6 for 11 on third down and perfect in the red zone with 4-4.
The Tigers also pressured the Bulldogs with six sacks. Linemen
Ernest Reed and
John Rachal had 1.5 sacks each.
Luke Holt led the defense with 12 tackles, while
Elijah Jones had 10 tackles and an interception.
Ouachita will host Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 6 p.m. Saturday at Cliff Harris Stadium. SWOSU will travel to Magnolia Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff against Southern Arkansas University.
