Heartbreak for Tigers in GAC Semifinals

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Ouachita women's soccer team survived an onslaught of shots only to come up short in a penalty kick shootout to top seeded Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday evening in the Great American Conference Tournament semifinals.

Ouachita (9-8-1) goalie Erin Webster (Alvin, Texas) and the rest of the Tigers back line proved tonight that they will be force in the seasons to come. The Tiger defense thwarted the Bison for four consecutive periods, Oklahoma Baptist attempted 52 shots and not one of them found the back of the net. Webster proved why she might be the best goalie in the league, collecting a career high 19 saves in 110 minutes of action.

Senior Bryson Thomas (Hurst, Texas) and newly minted GAC Freshman of the Year Jaymee Dotson (Princeton, Texas) were the only starters to get a shot off in regulation. Junior Kylie Sharp (Georgetown, Texas) also tried to help out the Tiger offense but saw her shot go wide of the goal.

For two full halves of play and two overtime periods the teams were deadlocked in a scoreless tie. In the shootout period Tiger midfielder Ashlyn Heckman (Frisco, Texas) missed her shot attempt for Ouachita. Kerregan Edwards executed scored to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. Dotson then stepped up to the line and tied the shootout at 1-1, Hannah White made her shot for the Bison giving Oklahoma the edge once again.

Thomas, stepped into the box and nailed her penalty kick attempt and knotting the score at two. Tori Kitchel scored for Oklahoma Baptist setting the stage for Shannon Stribling (Rogers, Ark.). Stribling missed her shot attempt putting the Tigers in a formidable situation. Regan Mann scored on her penalty kick attempt, giving Oklahoma Baptist the win and trip to the GAC Tournament title game against Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Ouachita gave it everything they had in the match. A season ago the women's soccer team won just three games, this year they ended with nine victories. The future is bright for the Tigers soccer team as only one All-GAC selection graduates from this year's squad.
