ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Four Ouachita women's basketball players combined for 59 points as Ouachita defeated Blue Mountain College 73-63 inside Bill Vining Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Ouachita (2-2) proved to be a dominant force in the paint, outscoring Blue Mountain College (1-2) 52-24. The Lady Tigers defense clamped down and scored 23 points off 22 Blue Mountain turnovers.
The Lady Tigers offense got off to a hot start in the opening minutes of the contest. Ouachita held a 7-2 lead less than a minute into the game after senior
Alivia Huell (Malvern, Ark.) knockdown a three-pointer at the 8:52 mark of the contest. Then both teams went on long scoring droughts and Ouachita took a 14-9 advantage going into the second quarter.
The second quarter appeared to be the most entertaining for the fans in attendance as the two teams combined for 50 points in the quarter. At the 3:33, mark left in the second stanza
Jakyya Clay knockdown a free throw to give the Lady Tigers a 34-16 lead and capping off an 18-7 run by Ouachita. Blue Mountain went on a run late in the quarter to try to keep the game close; Ouachita went into the halftime break up 44-29.
The Lady Tigers shot 41 percent in the second half and thwarted many Blue Mountain runs to pick-up the victory on Saturday afternoon. Ouachita led by as many as 17 in the third quarter before Blue Mountain began to cut into the lead. Ultimately, though the Lady Tigers were just too big and too powerful for Blue Mountain to overcome.
The win for Ouachita gives them their second consecutive victory and the Lady Tigers are back to .500 on the season.
Eden Crow (Texarkana, Ark.) and Huell stuffed the stat sheet, with each player coming away with a double-double in the game. Crow finished the contest with 16 points and 10 rebounds giving the sophomore a double-double in consecutive games for the first time in her career. Huell on the other hand collected her first double-double of the season after a 13 point, 10 rebound effort on Saturday afternoon.
Madison Brittain (Bentonville, Ark.) finished the afternoon tied for the team lead in points scored with 16. Brittain also lead the team in assists with six dish outs on the afternoon. Sophomore forward
Jakyya Clay (Marion, Ark.) finished the day with 14 points off a 6-8 shooting effort.
Marlee Hatcher led Blue Mountain College with 14 points, while Mackenzie Lane and Lauren Collins each contributed 11 points in the losing effort.
Ouachita will have the rest of the weekend off before they hit the road on Tuesday evening. The Lady Tigers will travel up to the University of Arkansas Fort Smith in one of their last non-conference matchups of the season.
