Brittain Bolsters Lady Tigers Past Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA, Ark. - Madison Brittain (Bentonville, Ark.) dropped a career high 22-points and senior guard Alivia Huell (Malvern, Ark.) picked up her third consecutive double-double as the Ouachita defeated Southern Arkansas 67-55 on Saturday afternoon.

The Ouachita Lady Tigers (4-4, 2-1 GAC) shot 48 percent from the field and 55 percent from beyond the arch. Meanwhile, the Ouachita defense suffocated the Southern Arkansas (1-6, 0-3 GAC) offense, holding the Muleriders to just 31 percent shooting in the game.

Brittain and the rest of the Lady Tigers got off to a hot start in the opening quarter of play. The junior guard knockdown her first of five three-pointers in the opening moments of the game to give Ouachita an early 3-0 advantage. A few seconds later Camryn Fennell grabbed an offensive board and scored the Muleriders first points of the game. From that point on it was a back-and-forth contest between the two schools. At the end of the quarter, the Lady Tigers had scored 18 points in the quarter off 50 percent shooting from the field. Ouachita connected on all four of their three-point attempts in the quarter.

The second quarter was scoreless the first two minutes of the quarter, before Brette Wacha scored the opening points of the period. The made layup cut the Lady Tigers lead down to 18-16. Sophomore forwards Eden Crow (Texarkana, Texas) and Jakyya Clay (Marion, Ark.) scored on back-to-back layups to keep the Lady Tigers ahead. At the 2:57 mark of the quarter, Lena Maledon sank a three-point basket to tie the game at 24, moments later Brittain answered with a three of her own to give the lead back to Ouachita. The Lady Tigers went into the halftime break up 33-28.

At the 5:28 mark of the third quarter, Madison Raney (Sheridan, Ark.) sank a free throw to give the Lady Tigers a four-point lead. The free throw and stingy defense sparked a 12-2 run for Ouachita, Rylee Lavender (Brock, Texas) knockdown a three pointer and Huell made a late layup to end the run for the Lady Tigers.
In the final quarter of play, Ouachita shot 54 percent from the field and 75 percent from beyond the three-point arch. The Lady Tiger defense forced Southern Arkansas to shot just 23 percent in the final quarter of play.

Brittain finished the afternoon with 22 points and five made three pointers. Huell added 18 points and 10 rebounds for her third consecutive double-double and Lavender finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arch to finish with a career high 11 points.
