Box Score BETHANY, Okla. – Ouachita Baptist University fell in overtime 76-71 to No. 12/14 Southern Nazarene on Thursday evening.
With 41 seconds to go in the overtime period Jhonathan Dunn took a pass from Zach Johnson converted on a three-point attempt to give the Southern Nazarene (18-1, 15-0 GAC) a 72-69 advantage. The shot swung the momentum in the Storms favor as they shot free throws the rest of the way.
The win keeps the storm on top of the Great American Conference standings at a perfect 15-0. It was the first overtime game of the season for Southern Nazarene and it was the second consecutive overtime game for the Tigers.
With the loss Ouachita (8-12, 6-9 GAC) see a two game winning streak come to a close. Since starting out the season 3-0, the Tigers have been unable to win three consecutive games. The loss also means that the Tigers have now lost four straight to the storm.
In the opening moments of the game Ouachita raced out to a 7-2 lead behind baskets from Isaiah Harper (Little Rock, Ark.) and Wesley Franklin (Frisco, Texas). The game was tied at 17 with 12:23 to go in the first half of play and Dunn came out of the media timeout and knocked down a triple to give the Storm their first lead of the half.
The Storm went up by as many as 16 points before the Tigers began to claw their way back into the game. Ouachita went into the locker room down by 10 points.
The second half was a completely different story for the Tigers both offensively and defensively. Ouachita outscored Southern Nazarene 34-24 in the second half. The Tigers defense limited the Storms offense to 43.5 percent shooting from the field and 14 percent shooting from beyond the three-point arch.
With 7:30 to go in the second half Harper drove to the basket and brought the Tigers within five points of the Storm. Harper found himself with the hot hand as he went on a 7-0 run by himself to give the Tigers a 60-59 advantage.
Quaylon Newton answered at the other end of the floor, but
Jontavis Willis (Strong, Ark.) hit a three-pointer to give the Tigers a two-point lead. With 1:37 remaining in the half Noah Starkey grabbed the offensive board and slammed it home bringing the Storm within two.
Moments later Dunn laid the ball in to the game at 65 with only 25 seconds left in the game. The overtime period was close for a while, but Southern Nazarene outscored Ouachita 11-6.
???????Aitor Lopez-Breton (Bilbao, Spain), Harper and
Jordan Corbitt (Frisco, Texas) all ended the night with 12 points in the contest.
Only four players scored for Southern Nazarene the whole night. Micah Speight ended with 25 points, Dunn had 20 points, Newton with 16 points and Starkey finished with 15 points.
Ouachita's next game will be on Saturday afternoon against Oklahoma Baptist. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
