Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Baptist women's basketball team fell 71-64 to Henderson State on Tuesday evening.
There must be something about the floor at Henderson State that Shakyla Begnaud (McGehee, Ark.) enjoys. In two career games, the sophomore has averaged 25.5 points. On Thursday evening, the sophomore picked up her first career double-double, while her career points total with 27.
The Lady Tigers tried to slow down Blu Jones in the opening moments of the first quarter, but were unable to as she was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and had 11 points by the first media timeout of the game.
After Jones went on her initial run, Ouachita (13-13, 9-11 GAC) locked down defensively as the Reddies did not register a point for 4:22 of the final 5 minutes of playing time. The drought allowed the Lady Tigers to pull within 4 points by quarters end.
Ouachita's offense began to catch fire in the opening minutes of the second quarter. The Lady Tigers started out the quarter a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to close the gap to 27-25.
With 2:51 to go in the half Begnaud hit a three-point bucket from the top of the key to tie the game at 30. The bucket was Begnaud's 16
th point of the first half. A few players later Jakya Clay (Marion, Ark.) converted on a layup attempt and Brittany Branum fouled her in the process. Clay sank the free-throw attempt as the Lady Tigers led 35-32.
Karrington Whaley made a basket in the closing seconds of the first half to make the score 35-34 advantage for the Lady Tigers.
Begnaud led the Lady Tigers in scoring in the first half resetting her career high in the process. Begnaud was 6-for-7 from the field with 16 points and 7 rebounds in the opening half. Jones not to be-out-shown on her home court had 15 points in the first half to lead the Henderson State.
The third quarter belonged to Henderson State (19-7, 15-5 GAC) as the Reddies opened up the quarter on a 12-3 run. The Lady Tigers had a difficult time responding to the initial run by the Reddies and trailed 54-49 going into the final quarter of play.
At the 4:44 mark in the fourth quarter, Begnaud grabbed the rebound and laid the ball in for her first career double-double. The rebound also started a 7-0 run for the Lady Tigers as they took back the lead at 60-59.
Henderson closed the game on a 12-4 run to seal the victory and the season sweep of the Lady Tigers.
Madison Brittain (Bentonville, Ark.) was the only other Lady Tiger to score in double figures. Henderson had three players finish in double digits behind Jones' 17 points.
Ouachita's next game will be on Thursday evening will be at home against Arkansas Tech. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
