Lady Tigers Roar into GAC Tournament

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Lady Tigers basketball team averaged 24.5 points a quarter against Southern Arkansas and picked up a 98-83 victory on senior day.

It was an offensive outburst that Ouachita (14-14, 10-12 GAC) had needed over the past several games. The Lady Tigers shot 51.5 percent from the field and 52 percent from beyond the three-point arch. Another key stat for Ouachita that helped cement the victory was 40 points from players off the bench.

Southern Arkansas (9-19, 8-14 GAC) tried to keep up with the Lady Tigers offense but were held to just 44 percent shooting from the field in the game.
The first quarter was neck-and-neck between the two teams as Ouachita just edged out Southern Arkansas 20-18 in the opening frame. The second quarter was the deciding difference in the game.

The Lady Tigers offense was red hot as they made 10-of-15 shots from the field, while also making five three-pointers in the quarter. Ouachita held Southern Arkansas to 31.3 percent shooting in the quarter.

At the 7:39 mark of the second quarter the game was tied at 25 after a Madison Brittain (Bentonville, Ark.) fast-break layup. The bucket started a 20-6 run for the Lady Tigers that lasted almost six minutes of game time.

Ouachita led at the halftime break up 46-34 behind Alivia Huell's (Malvern, Ark.) 11 points.

For most of the season the Lady Tigers offense seemed to slump in the second half, but today was the opposite as Ouachita scored 52 second half points.

In the third quarter the Lady Tigers offense did not let up as Southern Arkansas never came within five points the whole quarter. By the end of the quarter Ouachita led 73-55 as they began to put the game on cruise control.

Southern Arkansas did not give up without a fight however. The Lady Muleriders came within 11 points of the Lady Tigers on a number of occasions before Ouachita pulled ahead by 15 points to cement the game.

With less than 30 seconds remaining in the game Ouachita head coach Garry Crowder called timeout to take his two seniors out of the game. The Southern Arkansas coach did not appear to appreciate the gesture and was given a technical foul for his response to the official.

Kori Bullard (Hot Springs, Ark.) nailed the technical free throws to secure the victory for the Lady Tigers.

Bullard finished with 11 points in the contest while fellow senior Morgan Miller (Siloam Springs, Ark.) added 13 points in their final game at Bill Vining Arena. Taylor Bowles (Avery, Texas) was also honored at the game, Bowles had her season cut short due to injury but still scored 534 points in her Ouachita career.

Bullard and Miller were just two of the Lady Tigers double-digit scorers on the night. Brittain finished with a team high 16 points, Shakyla Begnaud (McGehee, Ark.) contributed 14 points, Huell and Chasidee Owens (Springdale, Ark.) each 13 points in the contest to round out the scoring for Ouachita.

Ouachita will face a familiar opponent in the first round of the Great American Conference Tournament next week as they take on arch-rival Henderson State.
