WICHITA, Kan. – The Ouachita Tigers split day two in the Newman Invitational, falling short to Northwest Missouri State University 0-3 before sweeping Newman University 3-0 in the second game.
At the conclusion of the day, Tiger's head coach
Allison Frizzell-Kizer was pleased with her girl's play on the court saying, "Much better day overall than yesterday. We clicked better this evening and made some defensive adjustments that helped our offense be steady.
Katie Camp stepped up and played solid offensively and defensively while JJ was consistent on serve receive. It's a long weekend, but it's making us grow as a team and begin to understand each of our roles."
With one day remaining for the Newman Invitational, the Tigers are lead by
Stormi Leonard (Decatur, Texas) with 94 assists,
Katie Camp (Plano, Texas) with 30 kills, and
Julianna Mack (Little Rock, Ark.) with 50 digs.
Game One: Ouachita 0, Northwest Missouri 3
After three back and forth battles, the Bearcats prevailed over the Tigers 3-0 for the first game of the day.
Set one saw a 5-1 early lead for the Tigers, but the Bearcats responded to tie the score at 10 each. Ouachita and Northwest Missouri went neck and neck, neither team budging an inch, but with the score 20-20, the Bearcats rang off five straight points to win the set 25-20.
For the second set, both teams jumped out in front of the other but the Bearcats gained the upper hand over the Tigers, recording 17 kills compared to the Tigers 10. The set ended 25-22 and placed Northwest Missouri a set away from sweeping the Tigers.
The Tigers turned the tables offensively against the Bearcats and recorded 17 kills of their own. At 18 each, the Bearcats managed to outscore the Tigers and win the final set 25-22.
Concluding the match, four Tigers found themselves with double-digit statistics: Leonard with 33 assists, Mack with 19 digs,
Shannon Hogan (Plano, Texas) with 11 digs, and
Adrianna Nolly (Denton, Texas) with 10 kills.
Game Two: Ouachita 3, Newman University 0
After a tough first two games for the Tigers, they responded by sweeping the Jets in straight sets to conclude day two of play in Wichita, Kan.
The first set saw the closest matchup for Ouachita and Newman at 25-22. Both teams went back and forth with 10 lead changes before the Tigers secured the final three points to win the set.
After a quick 6-2 run for the Tigers, the Jets tied things up at 14 apiece before Ouachita made an 11-5 run to close out the second set 25-19.
Despite the 18 kills the Tigers hit in the first set, the third set found Ouachita with its highest hitting percentage at .323. With the score tied 8-8, the Tigers closed out the match making a 16-2 run and gaining their first win in the tournament.
The Tigers had at least 12 kills in each set and were led by Camp, who recorded her first double-double (kills and digs) of her career with 15 kills and a career-high 16 digs. Leonard also recorded 38 assists, while Mack dug out 18 balls and
Hannah Johnston (Greenwood, Ark.) rounded out the dig party for Ouachita with 10 scoops.
Before the Tigers head back to Arkadelphia, they will play a final game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against the University of Arkansas Fort Smith.
