The Battle of the Ravine: Preview

#5 Ouachita Baptist University Tigers (10-0) vs. #22 Henderson State University Reddies (9-1)
Senior Day 2019 | "The Battle of the Ravine"
November 16, 2019 | 1pm | Arkadelphia, Ark. | Cliff Harris Stadium

ARKADELPHIA, ARK—Coming off a 35-7 win in front of a home crowd at Cliff Harris Stadium against the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils, the Tigers gear up as they get ready to take on cross town rival Henderson State in the closest rivalry in college football—"The Battle of the Ravine"

Last week, Henderson State pulled out a win late in the fourth quarter against Southern Arkansas, who the week before Ouachita beat by 17 points. The Reddies trailed 17-14 entering the fourth quarter but put up 24 points, including a score with 29 seconds left to sneak away from the Muleriders.

The Reddies only loss of the season came at the hands of Harding University, who Ouachita beat in an opening game thriller at Cliff Harris Stadium. Henderson fell 14-13 after only being able to score three points off of a fourth quarter drive that started at the Harding 33. On their only other drive of the game Reddie quarterback Richard Stammetti threw an interception on the second play of their drive.

Reddie Scouting Report:

Offense: The Henderson Offense, led by Quarterback Richard Stammetti who attempts on average 33 passes per game with a completion rate that sits right at 61%. On the year he has totaled up 2556 yards rushing (about 255/game) and -1 yards rushing. Against Harding his completion rate was a season low 44%. His favorite targets are L'Liott Curry who he has targeted 75 times on the year racking up 1039 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. Receiver Chase Lodree has been targets 39 times and has a reception for 20+ yards in 8 of the 10 games on the year.

On the ground attack Querale Hall and Logan Moragne split duties as running back. On the season has 519 yards on 109 rushes and five touchdowns and Moragne has 724 yards on 123 touches with 12 touchdowns. Morange also doubles as one of QB Richard Stammetti's go to targets.

Defense: Averaging 17.7 points per game on the season, the Reddie defense ranks third in the GAC right behind Ouachita. Colby Turner leads the Henderson squad with 38 solo and 34 assisted tackles on the year. Mercardo Anderson is a presence on the field with 40 solo tackles and four interceptions. He also has netted 13 TFL and 3 tacks, both more than any player on the team.

Ouachita Look-in:

Last week for Ouachita, the tiger offense lit up the board, scoring 28 points in the first half before laying back and letting some younger guys get a shot at in-season football action.

Offense: Quarterback Brayden Brazeal completed 11 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown. Receiver Allie Freeman received seven of those passes for 97 yards, a touchdown and the GAC record for most receptions by a single player in Great American Conference history. Hayden Waller also had two completions for 30 yards including a pass thrown high from Brazeal that was snagged and brought down by the 6'4" receiver.

However, where the Tiger offense has been hottest (If you discount a 76% completion rate by Brayden Brazeal) is the seemingly endless running back core. Brockton Brown has scored three touchdowns per game, in four of the last five games and averages seven yards per carry on the season. Darius Hopkins got some time in the spotlights against UAM rushing for 70 yards on seven carries. Shun'see Thomas has 546 yards and four touchdowns on the year as well.

Defense: The Tiger defense showed out last week recording a season high five sacks on the day. They were led by Austin Guymon who tallied nine tackles and two sacks. Hunter White followed right behind Guymon with eight tackles of his own. Lafoy Smith had a big day recording five tackles with three of them being for a loss. Two of his tackles for loss were sacks as the Tigers got after the Weevils quarterback. Jonathan Harris forced the Tigers turnover as he caused a fumble which was recoverd by Oshae Pruitt.

Senior Spotlight:

Before the Game the Tigers will honor 13 seniors who will be playing their last regular season game at Cliff Harris Stadium. They are: Allie Freeman IV, Keandre Evans, Tyrik Harris, Jake Ford Shun'cee Thomas, Brockton Brown, Lafoy Smith, Mitchell Emrich, Michael Neathery, Austin Blair, Jacob Roberts, Cori Gooseberry and Zach Curry.

Game History:

With a win the Tigers would break the series tie currently sitting at 43-wins a piece. Ouachita, which is on a three-year win streak in the series, defeated the Reddies 38-10 last year, the largest margin of victory in recent history.

Also with a win, the Tigers would solidify a playoff spot and would capture sole ownership in this year's GAC Championship.

10,000+ fans are expected to full Cliff Harris Stadium in one of the greatest rivalries in college football.
