ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas --- Down 21-17, Tiger Football drove 74 yards in 1:02 to score a game-winning touchdown with 35 seconds remaining to defeat rival Henderson State University 24-21 at Cliff Harris Stadium on Saturday.
Â
Sophomore QB
Brayden Brazeal led the Tigers' charge on Senior Day, completing 18 of his 25 passing attempts for 223 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 11 times for 33 net yards and a touchdown.
Â
Brazeal's favorite target on the day was senior WR
Allie Freeman, who caught seven balls for 74 yards and a highlight-reel touchdown. That yardage moved Freeman to fourth place for all-time receiving yardage for the Great American Conference.
Â
After a Reddie touchdown with only 1:37 left in the contest, the Tigers found themselves down four points with 74 yards between them and the end zone. Brazeal started the drive with an eight-yard carry. After an incompletion, Brazeal connected with sophomore WR
Justin Dean for 32 yards to break into Reddie territory. Freshman WR
Keemontrae McKnight hauled in a clutch 20-yard reception on the next play, and a late hit out-of-bounds by a Reddie defender gave the Tigers first-and-goal at the Reddie 7 yard line with less than a minute in regulation. Then, with 35 seconds left in the Battle of the Ravine, and facing third-and-goal from the Henderson State one yard line, senior RB
Brockton Brown plunged into the end zone for the winning score and his 22
nd rushing touchdown of the year, which set a new Great American Conference single-season rushing touchdown record.
Â
Brown finished his final game against the cross-street rivals with 16 rushes for 63 yards. Fellow senior RB
Shun'cee Thomas was right behind him with 14 rushes for 46 yards, while sophomore RB T.J. Cole added 27 yards on six carries.
Â
Down 14 in the first quarter, the Tigers had their backs against the wall. With the Reddies driving early in the second quarter, senior DB
Keandre Evans electrified the Tigers by jumping the route and picking off the pass for the Reddies' only turnover of the afternoon. Evans also led the team in tackles on the day with nine. Junior DL
Dameyun McDonald added to the strong defensive effort for the Tigers with two quarterback sacks, a forced fumble, and six tackles of his own.
Â
Freshman K
Gabe Goodman connected early in the fourth quarter on his only field goal attempt of the game with a thirty-six yard boot through the uprights, giving the Tigers their first lead of the day, 17-14.
