ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Brooke Taylor's pitch hit extra innings walk-off double gives the Ouachita Tigers their first win of the season.
Freshman pitcher
Mabry Smith got the call for her first collegiate start for the Tigers. She would go all eight innings and strike out 16 of a possible 24 batters in the process. Her 16 strikeouts would be the most by a Tiger since entering the Great American Conference.
In the first inning Christian Brothers would put some pressure on the Tigers before
Mabry Smith would strike out a batter to alleviate the situation. In the bottom half the Tigers would put two on base after an error and a hit by a pitch but could not bring them home. In the second CBU would get two on base, but Ouachita would shut it down an head into the bottom half of the inning. They would then put themselves in a great position as
Kelsey O'Brien walked and was put in scoring position by
Kyndal Moyer's first hit as a Tiger. However, the Tigers would not drive the runners in and after two the score was tied at zero. The top half of the third saw three batters and two strike outs as
Mabry Smith settled into the game. The bottom half was led off by a
Macy Wilson single, but a line out-tag out ended the inning.
In the top of the fourth Smith continued her ways as she made quick work of the batters she faced. In the bottom half the Tigers put in the first run of the game on a towering homerun over the left-center field wall. In the fifth an error allowed Christian Brothers to take the 2-1 lead. The Tigers would respond in the bottom half. After a
Tobi Finley walk, freshman
Madison Miller hit a triple to the right field wall. After the end of the fifth the game would be all tied up. In the sixth inning the Tigers and the Bucs would put would get hits,
Natalie Jackson for Ouachita, and runners on base but were not able to convert.
In the seventh Christian Brothers would get a runner to third base before
Mabry Smith struck out the batter that was up. For the Tigers they would use a two walks to put a runner in scoring position but a line out double play would end the inning. In extra Innings
Mabry Smith was not going to allow the Bucs any opportunities as she struck out all three batters. In the bottom half it only took one at bat for the Tigers who used the rule of a runner starting on second in extra innings to their advantage. After two fouled off bunt attempts freshman
Brooke Taylor lined a double into left field. The heroics gave Taylor her first hit and RBI as a Tiger.
The Tigers go to 1-1 on the year and will face off in a double header tomorrow against Drury and UT-Tyler at 1:00 PM and 3:00PM respectively.
