MAGNOLIA, Arkansas – The Ouachita Baptist University women's basketball team came up short on Saturday in a Great American Conference road game against Southern Arkansas, falling by a final score of 102-99.
The 201 combined points is tied for the fourth highest scoring total in Great American Conference history. It was the highest scoring total for the Tigers (3-4, 1-2 GAC) this season.
Although there were eight lead changes and seven tied scores, SAU (6-2, 2-1 GAC) led for all but four minutes of the game. The Muleriders held their biggest lead of 16 with 2:13 remaining in the third period. With Ouachita's leading scorer on the bench due to foul trouble, the Tigers made a push to hold its largest lead of three with just over a minute remaining before halftime. The Tigers led by one, 47-46, at the break.
The biggest scoring differential in the game came in the third period, when SAU outscored Ouachita by five, 29-22.
The Tigers rallied in the final six minutes of the fourth period to create a one-possession difference on five different occasions, but the SAU offense responded each time to keep the Tigers at bay.
Aspen Thornton finished above her nation-leading scoring average with a game-high 35 points. She was averaging 27 prior to Saturday's game. Her 35 against SAU was the third game of the season with at least 30. She finished the game 10-for-17 from the field, 2-for-3 on three-pointers, and 13-for-15 on free throws.
Three other Tigers reached double-digits in scoring. Makayla Miller finished with 18 points. Makenzie Schilmoeller had season-highs in points (15), minutes played (33), field goals made (five), and three-point field goals made (four). Laney Mears added 14 points. Claudia Vanzant finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
