SAU RALLIES TO GET PAST OUACHITA IN FIVE SETS

MAGNOLIA, Arkansas – For the sixth time this season, five sets were needed to decide a winner between the Ouachita Baptist University volleyball team and its opponent. Thursday night, Southern Arkansas came away with the win by final scores of 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, and 8-15.

It looked to be Ouachita's match after taking down the Muleriders in the first two sets. Ouachita (5-11, 1-4 Great American Conference) used one of its largest unanswered points streaks of the season, an 8-0 run, to build a lead in the second set that SAU (5-10, 1-4 GAC) could not come back from.

However, the Muleriders responded and used a pair of 6-0 runs in the third set to hold as much as a seven-point lead. The Tigers made it interesting with three straight points at a set point for SAU, but the Muleriders' big runs earlier in the set proved to have created a deficit too large to overcome.

SAU led for the entire fourth set, with one tie coming late at 23-all. The Muleriders responded with a pair of kills to force the fifth frame.

In the fifth, it was all SAU early. The Mulderiders went up 10-2 following a 6-2 run. Ouachita then rallied back-and-forth for the remainder of the set before eventually dropping the set and the match.

Ouachita's stat leaders were spread out among five players with at least seven points. Kayla Steinmeyer led the way with 12 kills. Rileigh Fielder added 11 kills. EJ Day had nine kills. Zhara Thomas and Brooke Jones each added seven.

The Tigers step out of conference play on Monday, October 4 to take on Williams Baptist at home starting at 5 p.m.
