MONTICELLO, Arkansas – The Ouachita Baptist University Men's Basketball team wrapped up the 2022 half of its season with a 61-56 win on the road against the Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello.
Ouachita (4-4, 2-2 GAC) was able to outlast UAM (5-5, 1-3 GAC) in what was a low scoring affair for both sides. The first half was back and forth with six ties and five lead changes, but the Tigers were able to tie and take the final lead of the half on free throws from
Alex Scariolo. Ouachita was able to extend that lead on a
Tylar Haynes jumper with just two seconds left in the half. The Tigers were able to take a 30-27 lead into the break.
The Tigers opened the second half on a 9-3 run and didn't look back. Ouachita would extend its lead to nine points with 13:25 left in the game on free throws from
LaQuan Butler Jr. Monticello would attempt to claw back into the game, cutting the deficit to two points with just over eight minutes left. The Tigers would push their lead back out to eight and maintain control of the game until the final buzzer with Ouachita coming out on top.
A total of five Tigers reached double-digit points, with
Ma'Darius Hobson and
Tylar Haynes tying for the top spot with 13 points apiece. Haynes reached that mark effiencntly, going 4-of-5 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free-throw line. Haynes also led in rebounds with nine, almost securing another double-double.
Reggie Martin was next in line with 11 points, followed by Butler Jr. and Scariolo with 10 points each to round out the Tigers in double digits.
Ouachita outshot UAM 49 percent to 42 percent, despite the Tigers going just 1-for-10 from three-point range. The Tigers proved to have sticky hands as well, racking up a total of 10 steals on the afternoon.
The Tigers have the Holidays off and will return to action on January 5, 2023 when they head to Bethany, Oklahoma to take on the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm.
