MIAMI, Oklahoma – Jaylon Otero and
William Martin each finished third place in their respective brackets to lead the Ouachita Baptist University wrestling team at the Northeast Oklahoma A&M Golden Norsemen Open on Saturday.
Otero (12 points) opened the 157 bracket with two straight wins, including a win by fall in 2:23 over Carl Albert State's Derrick Leatherman and a win by tech fall (18-2) over NEO's Cayson Deyalsingh. After suffering a close loss in the semifinals, Otero then took down Central Missouri's Anthony Erickson by a 7-2 decision in the consolation semis before earning another win by fall in the third-place match, again in 2:23, but this time over Schreiner's Julian Montongo.
Martin (8.5 points) had a similar path in the 184 bracket. He earned wins by decision (8-3 and 10-3) in the first two rounds over Carl Albert State's Michael Chancellor and Texas Wesleyan's Hayden Ulrich, respectively. After a loss in the semis, he then earned a close win by decision (3-2) in the consolation semis before pinning Iowa Western's Kolby Larson in the third-place match in just 1:34.
Otero and Martin accounted for 20.5 of Ouachita's 44 team points in the event.
Chandler Cooley (5.5 points),
Donald Paul (4.5 points), and RJ Hild (3.5) were other top performers for the Tigers, all in the 285 bracket, along with
Alex Thyes (3.5) in the 149. Other point earners included
Hudson Herring and
Cole McCartney with 2.5 points each in the 141,
Zander Fields with two points in the 149, and
Terrence Murray with two points in the 174.
The Tigers are off until February 12 with the Great Lakes Valley Conference Duals in Springfield, Missouri.
