KNIGHT TAKES OVER AS ARKANSAS’ ALL-TIME COACHING WINS LEADER

ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita Baptist University football team earned a 41-21 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Saturday night at home to make Todd Knight the all-time leader in wins for a college football coach in the state of Arkansas.

Knight moves to 163-104 in his 26th season at his alma mater, breaking a tie with his coach, the late Buddy Benson, who won 162 games at Ouachita from 1965-1995. The late Frank Broyles is third behind Knight and Benson with 144 wins at the University of Arkansas (1958-1976). Overall in his head coaching career, Knight is now 191-136-2 including six seasons at Delta State (1993-1998).

 
Saturday's win over the Savage Storm was highlighted by big plays and five takeaways. Among the five touchdowns for the Tigers, two were 60-plus yard passes, and two others were at least 20-yard plays. The defense came up with two interceptions in the win and also recovered three Southeastern fumbles.

Quarterback Nate TenBarge had a career day, completing 13 passes for 248 yards and four touchdowns. Carter McElhany was his favorite target with four receptions for 133 yards and two touchdowns. The duo hooked up for a 63-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and then struck again for 31 yards early in the fourth quarter.

AJ Jones had three receptions for 78 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. Nathan Stafford had four catches for 53 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown.

In addition his passing touchdowns, TenBarge also found the endzone on the ground with a three-yard score midway through the fourth quarter to put an exclamation mark on the victory.

Braylon Johnson paced the defense with 10 tackles. Justin Crutchmer came up with an interception and a fumble recovery. Max Dickson, Jr. and Joey Ortego recorded the other two fumble recoveries. Defensive lineman Gabe Williams grabbed an interception returned 11 yards. The Tigers scored 20 points off turnovers.

Dax Jaggers accounted for the other Tiger scoring in the win, going 2-for-2 on field goals and 5-for-5 on extra points.

Southeastern (1-1) ended up with 340 yards of total offense and outrushed the Tigers 184-152. Quarterback Levay Ducan had 236 yards of total offense and two passing touchdowns. Running back DJ Brown had 72 rushing yards and one touchdown.

The Tigers are back in action next Saturday, September 20 at home against Arkansas Tech University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Cliff Harris Stadium.
