TOPEKA, Kan. -- A late first-half goal became the difference Sunday as the Ouachita women's soccer team lost to Washburn 1-0 on the road at Yager Stadium.
Washburn struck first in the 42nd minute when defender Shaye Taylor stepped up from the back line and slotted her first goal of the season over the reach of Ouachita's starting goalkeeper to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers generated two shots on goal in the first half, but junior Isabella Savattere and sophomore Sahara Adams were both denied by Washburn's goalkeeper.
Ouachita struggled to find its rhythm to attack and failed to get a shot off after the halftime break. The Tigers (1-4-1) spent much of the second half weathering the constant pressure from the Ichabods. Washburn maintained possession for 59% of the match and outshot Ouachita 14-3, with six shots on target. The Ichabods (3-2-1) attempted nine shots in the second half, forcing sophomore goalkeeper Rylie LeBlanc to secure three key saves just to keep the Tigers within striking distance.The Tigers could not capitalize on three corner kicks.
Ouachita aims to snap its three game losing streak in the Great American Conference opener against East Central at Kluck Field on Thursday.
