Roy Thompson is entering his 12th season on the Ouachita staff. Thompson is in his sixth season as Defensive Coordinator after spending two seasons in the Co-Defensive Coordinator role.

The 2023 season saw the Tigers rank second in the GAC allowing just 20.2 points per game. Three Ouachita linebackers earned all-conference honors for their performances under Thompson.  

In 2022, the Tiger defense ranked near the top of the GAC, allowing just 20 points per game, en route to their sixth conference title. Thompson's defense helped Ouachita secure an undefeated 11-0 regular season, and allow for an average margin of victory of 20 points. 

Thompson has transformed the Tigers' defense into one of the top defensive units nationally, ending the 2019 regular season No. 4 in scoring defense in the country and finishing No. 1 in Division II in scoring defense during the 2018 regular season.

The 2019 defensive unit helped Ouachita capture its third consecutive Great American Championship, reach the NCAA playoffs for the third straight year, and finish with an 11-1 record.

During his Ouachita career Thompson has coached 13 All-Great American Conference linebackers, including 2018 All-Region linebacker Aric Parker, and multiple All-Conference defensive linemen during his time as the Defensive Line Coach for the Tigers including two All Americans, two All-Region performers and an NFL free agent.
 
Thompson spent 2014 and 2015 as the Assistant Head Coach/ Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach at Mendocino College in Ukiah, California. Thompson’s defensive unit finished the 2015 season ranked No. 4 in total defense in the state of California as well as the, No. 1 defense in the Pac-7 Conference and No. 15 nationally in total defense. 

Thompson is in his 16th season coaching with other stops including Highland Community College in Kansas and Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi.

Coach Thompson is a 2006 graduate of Belhaven University, where he served as team captain during the 2006 season. Thompson and his wife Julia have three girls - Jadyn, London, and Cameron - and one son, Trey.
