Tigers Hold off Late Run from Arkansas-Monticello to Capture Conference Victory

MONTICELLO, Ark.- The Ouachita Tigers (5-3, 2-2 GAC) took a nail biter over the Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello (4-3, 1-3 GAC) on Saturday, just squeezing out a 65-63 victory despite a late run from UAM.
 
The Tigers held a 37-26 advantage at the end of the first half, in large part to Colt Fason's 11 points and seven rebounds. The Tigers shot 53.6 percent from the floor, including a 50 percent mark from behind the three point line, while holding Arkansas-Monticello to just 40.7 percent from the floor.
 
The Boll Weevils chipped away at the Tiger lead in the second half though, cutting it down to two points on a number of occasions, but the most important came with just 50 seconds left. Both teams had possessions but were unable to net a basket, closing out the two point victory for the Tigers.
 
Austin Mitchell led the Tigers on offense, picking up 23 points, five rebounds and three assists. Colt Fason added 14 points for the team, while Nigel Ramsey added 10. Fason and Morris led the way on the boards for the Tigers, picking up eight and seven respectively.
 
The Boll Weevils looked to Kori Forge for the majority of their scoring, as he finished with 20 points in the game. AJ Calhoun and Dayton Mickens both added 10 for the team. Mickens finished with a double-double, posting 10 rebounds as well.
 
The Tigers turned the ball over 20 times, while UAM only committed 15 of their own. The Tigers also struggled to rebound the ball, as Arkansas-Monticello recorded 39 boards to their 32. The story of the game was field goal percentage, as the Tigers shot 50 percent from the floor while holding the Boll Weevils to just 37 percent in the game.
 
Ouachita will return to action on Tuesday, December 18, when they host Texas A&M-Commerce. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Bill Vining Arena.
