BARTLESVILLE, Okla.- It was déjà vu all over again for the Ouachita Tiger basketball team on Friday evening, as they downed the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm in the first round of the Great American Conference for the second year in a row. The Tigers won by a final score of 67-60, led by their perfect performance from the free throw line.
The Tigers and Savage Storm were engaged in a knock-down drag-out fight in the first half, with both teams battling back and forth and fighting for control of the game. Southeastern led by seven at one point, but the Tigers rallied to a three point lead at halftime.
A quick start to the second half for the Tigers gave them a 12 point lead with a little over 12 minutes left to play in the game. A 7-0 run from Southeastern closed the gap though and led to a tight 10 minutes of play to close out the game.
Ouachita held just a one point advantage with 1:47 left to play, but a huge pair of free throws from
Austin Mitchell, followed by an and-one conversion by
Nigel Ramsey gave them a six point lead.
Kyle Francis knocked down a pair of free throws shortly after, giving the Tigers a solid eight point advantage with 20 seconds left and sealing the victory.
Ouachita made all 19 of their free throw attempts in the game.
Nigel Ramsey and
Michael Morris led the team with 15 points each.
Eric Braeuer added 11, while
Colt Fason finished with 10 points. Fason led the team on the boards with eight, but Ramsey and Morris both grabbed seven, leading to a 36-33 rebounding advantage for the Tigers.
Southeastern's Andres Misters led the team with 20 points, while Steven Kohli posted 19 and Mateus Oliveira finished with 11. The Tigers held SOSU's leading scorer, Chris Roussell, to just five points in the game, all of which came on free throws.
With the win, the Tigers move on to the semi-finals of the tournament, where they will face off with Harding University. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Saturday evening in Bartlesville.
