ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Two late falls from Garret Evans and
Nate Rodriguez helped OBU Tiger Wrestling pick up a win on Wednesday night, defeating the Oklahoma City University Stars by a total score of 22-26.
Zach Mathews put OBU on the board early, with a 4-1 decision to give the Tigers a 0-3 overall lead.
Bobby Williams immediately followed Mathews with a pin, giving the Tigers a commanding 0-9 lead. The Stars would take a 12-9 lead, however, as
Andrew Martin and Joey Hutchens both fell in the next two matches.
Ouachita's
Dallas Smith, ranked first in the Division II 184-pound class, ended the Stars run with a 19-3 technical fall. OBU would claim the lead once again at 12-14. The next two matches would go to Oklahoma City, as
O'Dell Lee and
Nathan Jackson came up short for the Tigers. Lee's match ended in a 2-3 decision, and Jackson's ended in a 2-4 decision.
Down 18-14, the Tigers called on Garret Evans who pinned his opponent in the final seconds of the match to give OBU a 20-18 lead. Evans is ranked in the top ten nationally in pins and has recorded pins in three of his last four matches.
Nate Rodriguez, ranked eighth nationally in the 133-pound class, recorded the second consecutive pin for the Tigers and put Ouachita ahead 18-26 with one match to play. Seth Hutchinson lost in a 2-9 major decision in the final match, but the Tigers pulled out the 22-26 victory.
Tiger Wrestling will be at home on Jan. 25, as they take on Central Missouri at 2:00 p.m.
