Tigers Storm Back In The Second Half To Beat Southeastern Oklahoma 62-60

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Junior guard Micah Delph sank two free-throws with three seconds left in the game to give the Ouachita Tigers (7-11, 4-8 GAC) a 62-60 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State in Bill Vining Arena Thursday night. Led by Colt Fason's 14 second-half points, the Tigers erased an eight point first half deficit to get the win.

The Tigers faced a tough Southeastern defense in the first half. The Savage Storm extended both their zone and man sets to take away any open looks the Tigers' shooters had from outside. Ouachita shot only 33% in the first period of play. Southeastern shot 50% and were able to work an inside-outside game between Urald King and their guards.

King had 10 first-half points, all coming in the paint, while guard John Balwigaire scored 11 from outside. Down eight with 6:10 left, the Tigers were able to get it to within three, but missed shots kept them at bay. They trailed by five, 32-27 going into half time.

The Tigers came out in the second half attacking the basket on both sides of the court. Eric Braeuer scored seven straight points for Ouachita on two layups and a three-pointer to tie the game at 36-36 with 17:03 left in the game.

Ouachita would go on a 15-2 run over the next seven minutes highlighted by Colt Fason's two three-pointers and Allen Buchanan's throw-down dunk off the alley-oop pass from Eric Braeuer. The 13 point lead would be the largest of the game from either team.

Defensively, the Tigers locked down the Southeastern shooters in the second half. The Savage Storm shot only 35% in the second half, including a 1-10 performance from beyond the arc. Southeastern continued to score in the paint, powered by King's 12 points.

With 1:14 left in the game, King would score inside to put Southeastern up 59-58. On the next possession, Braeuer would hit a streaking carven Holcombe underneath the basket for the lay-in and the Tigers would reclaim a one point lead with 14 seconds left in the game.

Southeastern would hit 1-2 from the free-throw line on their next possession making it 60-60. Micah Delph would be fouled going to the basket with three seconds left in the game and have to free-throw attempts to put the Tigers up two. He sank both.

Delph, who shot only 1-11 from the field, went 7-8 from the free-throw line (all in the second half). His free-throws would be crucial in getting the Tigers (who shot 81% from the charity stripe as a team) the win.

Southeastern had a layup attempt with time running out but missed the shot, getting the Tigers a crucial conference win heading into the final stretch of GAC play.

Colt Fason led the Tigers with 22 points, shooting 9-14 from the floor, 6-7 in the second half. He also had seven rebounds.

Eric Braeuer had 12 points and four assists. Micah Delph scored 10, seven coming from the free-throw line.

Carven Holcombe pulled down eight rebounds, three of which were offensive. Allen Buchanan scored eight on the night and brought the house down with two alley-oop dunks.

The Tigers continue conference play this Saturday against East Central University. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm in Bill Vining Arena.
