Hot first-half shooting carries Lady Tigers to victory

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After spending over 32 minutes with the lead, the Ouachita Lady Tigers defeated the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm 71-67 on Saturday. The victory moved Ouachita to 2-7 in the Great American Conference this season.
 
The first ten minutes of the game featured five lead changes and three ties until a three-pointer from Kesha Broussard gave the Lady Tigers the sixth and final lead-change of the contest. Late in the first half, Ouachita extended its lead to double-digits on a 9-0 run in which Breanna Harris scored seven points.
 
After the Savage Storm (12-5, 5-4 GAC) brought the lead within 10, Ouachita's Taylor Bowles scored four back-to-back baskets for the Lady Tigers to give Ouachita a 45-35 lead at the break.
 
The Lady Tigers finished the first half shooting 58.6 percent from the floor while holding Southeastern to only 39.3 percent. Ouachita also knocked down 7-11 three-pointers. SOSU's low field-goal percentage resulted in eight more rebounds for Ouachita in the first half, and the Lady Tigers recorded five more assists, as well.
 
Bowles led all scorers at the half with 15 points without missing a shot. Bowles was 6-6 from the field, including 3-3 from deep. Harris followed with nine first-half points and a team-high five rebounds.
 
In the second half, the Lady Tigers maintained their lead despite multiple comeback-attempts by the Savage Storm. After a layup by Harris that extended Ouachita's lead back to 10 with 16:21 to play, Southeastern eventually cut the lead to two on an 11-3 run.
 
Southeastern brought the score within two points six times in the final 12:36 of the second half, but the Lady Tigers never surrendered the lead. With four seconds remaining in the contest, Southeastern's Olivia Potter missed a free-throw with hopes of an offensive rebound, but Kori Bullard secured the board for the Lady Tigers. Bullard then netted two free-throws with two seconds remaining to seal the win for Ouachita.
 
The Lady Tigers posted a second-half field-goal percentage of only 30.8 percent but were able to convert on 9-12 free-throws. Katie Kapler led the charge for Ouachita in the second half, scoring nine points and grabbing eight rebounds.
 
Ouachita ended the game shooting 45.5 percent from the field, compared to Southeastern's 37.5 percent. The Lady Tigers also out-rebounded the Savage Storm 44-29. Bowles finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-10 shooting from the field. Harris added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Kapler recorded 13 points and 11 boards for her fourth double-double of the season. Bullard was the fourth Lady Tiger to score in double-digits, as she scored 10 points and added six rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers (6-10, 2-7 GAC) will travel across the street for their next matchup, as they take on Henderson State University. The game is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22, at 5:30 p.m.
