Tirrell Brown and
Colt Fason, the Ouachita Tigers defeated the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys 71-57 on Saturday. During halftime, former Ouachita Tigers were honored, in which Governor Asa Hutchinson declared Jan. 31 "Bill Vining Day" after former coach Bill Vining, the all-time leader in Ouachita history with 520 wins.
Brown and Fason scored the first seven points for the Tigers, and Ouachita opened the game on a 10-1 run. Once the Wonder Boys pulled within two with 10:36 to go in the half,
Allen Buchanan sparked a 10-2 with a fast-break dunk after the pass from
Micah Delph. The Tigers then maintained a lead of at least six for the rest of the period and went into halftime ahead 31-22.
The Tigers held Arkansas Tech (9-12, 5-8 GAC) to a 30.8 percent field-goal percentage in the first half, while Ouachita netted 40.7 percent off its shots from the floor. The Tigers also forced 10 turnovers which resulted in 11 points for Ouachita.
Brown and Fason led all scorers at the break with 12 points each, with a combined shooting percentage of 58.8 percent.
Ouachita grabbed a double-digit lead after the first possession in the second half, which it kept building on until the Tigers eventually claimed its first 20-point lead after back-to-back three pointers from
Justin McCleary.
In the final 13 minutes after Ouachita claimed a 20-point lead, the Wonder Boys were never allowed to pull within double-digits. The Tigers held Tech to a 37 percent shooting percentage in the second half, including 2-13 from behind the arc. Ouachita, however, netted 46.4 percent of its shots from the floor, including 5-8 from deep and 10-11 from the free-throw line.
Along with 22 points each, Brown and Fason added seven boards each, and Brown blocked three shots. McCleary followed with 13 points for the game, and
David Berete added seven points and seven assists.
Fason's 22 points against the Wonder Boys gives him a total of 1,072 for his career, currently ranking him 14
th in Ouachita men's basketball history.
The Tigers (14-4, 10-3 GAC) currently hold the top spot in the Great American Conference standings. Their next conference matchup will be in Ada, Okla. as the Tigers take on Northwestern Oklahoma State. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
