Tigers defeat Bison 31-20

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tigers rushed for 319 yards and Austin Warford went 10-13 and threw for two touchdowns to give Ouachita a 31-20 win over Oklahoma Baptist. The win improves the Tigers to 6-3 and clinches the Tigers eighth straight winning season.

Ouachita's Kris Oliver gained 193 rushing yards and had three receptions for 84 yards. His first reception went for 51 yards and the game's opening score. On a third and six play, Warford found Oliver open in the right flat. Oliver eluded a Bison tackler and broke free down the near sideline for the score,

The opening drive for the Bison stalled on their own 47 yard line. After a Bison puny, Ouachita's second drive of the opening quarter began on their own 12. The Tigers offense orchestrated a 13-play drive that consisted of four plays of 10 –plus yards including a 21-yard reception by Ke'Vontae Pope. The drive culminated with Warford's second touchdown pass of the quarter, a five-yard toss to tight end Johnathan Powell.

The Tigers began the second quarter with the ball on the 50 yard line. Seven plays later, Warford ran the ball in from 16 yards out to give the Tigers a 21-0 lead over the Bison. Oklahoma Baptist answered the Tiger score on their next drive, scoring on a run from 42 yards out. After the failed PAT, the Bison trailed 21-6.

After a Tiger turnover on downs late in the second quarter, the Bison put together a 12 play, 69-yard drive to run down the clock and score their second touchdown of the half and cut the Tiger lead to 21-13 going into the half.

Ouachita's defense held the Bison on their opening possession of the second half, forcing them to punt. Austin Warford kept the ensuing Tigers' drive alive twice with big pass-plays on third on long. Once on a 13-yard completion to Pope and once on a 23-yard completion to Evian Hill. On a third and two from the Oklahoma Baptist 19, Kris Oliver broke through the Bison line and ran to the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the day.

Oklahoma Baptist got their offense rolling on the next possession, going 56 yards on 12 plays and scoring on a quarterback keeper with 37 seconds left in the third quarter, cutting the Ouachita lead to 28-20.

After a three and out forced the Tigers to punt at the start of the fourth quarter, the Tigers defense was called upon to make a big stop. After driving down to the Ouachita 49 yard line, a bad snap over the Bison quarterback put Oklahoma Baptist in a third down situation with 31 yards needed for a first down. The Tigers held and forced another Bison punt.

On the first play of their ensuing drive, Oliver broke loose for 35-yard run down to the Oklahoma Baptist 23 yard line. Cole Antley would strike true for a 23-yard field goal, giving Ouachita a 31-20 lead with 5:29 remaining in the game.

Calling on the defense again, the Tigers forced the Bison to turn the ball over on downs. Taking over on their own 40, the Tigers moved down to Oklahoma Baptist six yard line on four straight runs by Oliver. Oliver gained 54 yards on those four carries to seal the game for the Tigers.

The 31-20 win ensures the Tigers have a winning season for the eighth straight season, the longest such streak by any college football program in Arkansas. It was the Tigers 10th-straight conference win at Cliff Harris Stadium.

Austin Warford had 178 yards passing and two touchdowns. He rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Kris Oliver had 277 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns. It was his sixth game this year with two or more touchdowns.
