Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Despite being outscored 43-36 in the second half, the GAC Champion Ouachita Tigers defeated the Henderson State Reddies 80-78 in the second and final Battle of the Ravine of the 2014-2015 season.
Colt Fason led the Tigers with 18 points, moving him to 10
th on the Ouachita men's basketball all-time scoring list.
The Tigers held the lead for much of the first half, and 9-0 run capped off with a layup by
Tirrell Brown with 2:34 until the break gave Ouachita its first double-digit lead. After a basket by Henderson's Kelvin Dixon, Ouachita's
David Berete traveled coast-to-coast and finished with a fast-break layup to put the Tigers ahead 44-35 at the halfway point.
Ouachita claimed its lead behind 58.1 percent shooting from the field. The Tigers held the Reddies to only 44.8 percent on field goals, including 0-7 from three-point range. Eight different Tigers scored in the half, with
Tirrell Brown leading the way with 10 points.
After just one minute into the second half, the Tigers claimed another double-digit after a layup by
Jerron Smith. Despite Henderson pulling within 10 once again, the Tigers finally claimed their largest lead of 15 with 11:48 to play after a 10-2 run. The Reddies immediately responded, however, with a 9-0 run, and with 2:34 remaining, Henderson pulled within two points after a layup by Dixon.
Clinging to a two-point lead, Ouachita's
Colt Fason knocked down two free-throws with 18 seconds to play to clinch the victory for the Tigers.
Henderson was fueled in the second half by Reggie Murphy, who scored 17 points on 7-12 shooting. Murphy finished with a game-high 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Ouachita finished with a field-goal percentage of 51.8 percent, including 42.9 percent from deep and 84.2 percent from the free-throw line. To go along with Fason's 18 points, Brown scored 16 and
Micah Delph added 15. Delph finished the game 4-6 from three-point range. Smith also scored in double-digits, scoring 11 points on 4-5 shooting.
With the win, the Tigers secured their eighth 20-win season in program history. Ouachita's men's basketball team surpassed 20 wins in 1942, '65, '70, '72, '74, '78, '87, and most recently in 2008. Former head coach Bill Vining, Sr. coached six of those teams.
Fason has now scored 1,149 in his career, ranking him 10
th all-time in Ouachita history. He is currently 18 points shy of Austin Mitchell who played for the Tigers from 2008-2012. Fason is also 11 points away from becoming the Great American Conference's all-time leading scorer.
The Tigers (20-4, 16-3 GAC) defeated the Reddies in their final home game of the season, giving Ouachita a perfect 13-0 record at home. Ouachita has also won nine straight games. The Tigers will play their final regular-season game on Saturday, Feb. 28, in Searcy, Ark. Ouachita will take on the Bisons of Harding at 7:30 p.m.
