Tigers shut out Hillcats in season opener

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tigers put on an offensive showcase on Friday, defeating the Rogers State Hillcats 6-0 in the first women's soccer match of the 2015 season. Haley Hatcher, who finished the 2014 season tied for seventh in all of Division II with 17 goals, scored the first two in the victory.

The Tigers (1-0) took only half an hour to gain the lead, when Hatcher scored a breakaway goal on an assist from Alyssa Aguilar. Less than five minutes later, Hatcher followed with another goal on a shot from 22 yards out that sailed over the hands of RSU's Taylor Stover.

Ouachita gained a 3-0 lead just before halftime, after Miranda Vanderploeg stole the ball from Rogers State (0-1) in its own box and scored from 10 yards out. The Tigers finished the half with nine shots, while holding Rogers State to six.

In the second half, Alisa Trejo netted her first goal of the season in the 63rd minute. Trejo received the ball from the left side of the field from Kasey Smith. Audrey Rodriguez joined in on the action with the fifth goal of the match in the 67th minute, and Kamryn Martin put the Tigers ahead by six in the 72nd minute on another assist by Aguilar.

Rogers State finished with four more total shots than the Tigers, but Ouachita recorded 15 shots on goal compared to the Hillcats' nine. Both teams ended with nine saves each.

Hatcher led the Tigers with seven total shots and four shots on goal. Trejo followed with three shots, all being on goal, and Bryson Thomas added two shots.

Lauren Llanes started at keeper for Ouachita, holding the Hillcats scoreless in the first half and accumulating three saves. Katy Alexander stepped in goal in the second half and helped record the shutout while saving six shots.

The Tigers will host Northeastern State for their next contest on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The match will begin at 4 p.m. and Wesley and Debbie Kluck Field on Ouachita's campus.
