Reed leads Tigers to split with Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. - After losing the first game, the Ouachita Tigers defeated the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm, 6-5, behind six innings from Connor Reed. Reed allowed just one run and struck out four on the way to his second win of the season.

In game one, Ouachita (5-13, 3-7 GAC) took the first lead of the contest on a sacrifice fly by Will Wallace in the top of the first inning. Southeastern Oklahoma State (10-12) responded, however, with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Savage Storm led off with a single, and four walks and a hit-by-pitch allowed Southeastern to take a 3-1 lead.

After struggling in the first inning, Connor Eller settled on the mound and held the Savage Storm scoreless over the next four innings. Ouachita was not able to put any runs on the board, as well, going without a hit until the ninth inning.

A three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth put the Savage Storm ahead by five, and Southeastern added one more in the seventh to take a 7-1 lead. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Victor Draijer singled through the left side, but the Savage Storm picked up the final out on the next at bat, ending Ouachita's chances at a comeback.

Eller was handed the loss for the Tigers, allowing six runs in six innings. He also walked eight batters, after coming into the start with just eight total walks on the season. Zach Gloff pitched the final two innings for Ouachita, allowing an unearned run and striking out two.

In the second game, Ouachita took the early lead again, this time on a one-out single by Ryan Hammer that scored Justin Weigle. The Tigers added three more runs in the inning after an error, including an RBI-single by Aaron Studdard.

In the top of the third, Studdard added his second RBI of the contest, scoring Austin White on a single to left field. The Savage Storm added a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but Reed recorded consecutive outs to leave three runners on base and keep the 5-1 lead for the Tigers.

Ouachita extended its lead to five runs after J.D. Speed walked with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, and Lance Cullum replaced Reed in the bottom of the inning. A walk and hit-by-pitch brought in Jacob May, however, with the Tigers still clinging to the 6-1 lead.

May allowed a single to load the bases but struck out the next batter looking. He then forced a grounder, but the Tigers could not complete the double play, allowing one run to score. With two outs, Southeastern scored three more runs on a homer to left center, but the game finally ended after a fly out with Ouachita ahead, 6-5.

Studdard led the Tigers with two hits and two runs batted in, while Hammer added two hits and one RBI.

Ouachita will finish its series with the Savage Storm on Monday, March 14, with a nine-inning game scheduled for 1 p.m.
