Weevils take series opener from Tigers

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Ouachita Tigers dropped the opening game of a three-game series with the Arkansas at Monticello Weevils on Friday. Ouachita scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the score, but the Weevils answered with five in the seventh and eventually took the 9-3 win.

Arkansas at Monticello (17-7, 10-3 GAC) opened the contest with a single, followed by a walk. A double that came later in the top of the first allowed both runs to score and give the Weevils an early advantage.

Ouachita (7-19, 4-12 GAC) led off with a single in three of the first four innings of the game, but the Tigers could not capitalize and left three runners on base. In the bottom of the fifth, however, Aaron Studdard walked and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A bunt-single by Victor Draijer allowed Studdard to move to third, and a single to right field by Justin Weigle score both runners to tie the game.

The Weevils took the lead back in the top of the seventh inning, scoring five runs on four hits and two walks. The Tigers answered in the bottom-half of the inning, as a sacrifice fly by Weigle scored Studdard from third, but the Weevils held Ouachita to the single run to maintain a 7-3 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Ouachita was able to load the bases on an error and two walks, but back-to-back strikeouts left three runners on base. Arkansas at Monticello then took a six-run lead on consecutive doubles in the top of the ninth, and, despite a lead-off single from Drew Feuerbacher in the bottom of the ninth, the Weevils held the Tigers scoreless to secure the victory.

Behind two hits each from Weigle and Draijer, Ouachita finished the contest with seven hits. Weigle also led the Tigers with two runs batted in. The two runs were the only RBI for the Tigers, as Ouachita left nine runners stranded.

Connor Eller started on the mound for the Tigers and suffered the loss. Eller pitched 6.1 innings and struck out six. Zach Gloff, Kason Kimbrell and Lance Cullum combined for the final 2.2 innings, with Kimbrell allowing zero runs and striking out two.

The Tigers will wrap up their three-game series with the Weevils on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for noon.
