ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Ouachita baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, falling, 9-1 and 6-5, to the University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevils. Connor Reed highlighted the day for the Tigers, pitching a complete game and striking out 11 in game two.
In the first game, both teams were held without a hit through the first three innings. John Franklin Matros started on the mound for Ouachita (7-21, 4-14 GAC), holding the Weevils scoreless until a one-run fourth inning gave Arkansas at Monticello (19-7, 12-3 GAC) a 1-0 lead.
The Weevils added to their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits and one error. Arkansas at Monticello led off the inning with three consecutive singles, but Matros recorded the first out with a strikeout. Matros then forced a ground ball for a potential double play, but an error allowed two runs to score.
Ouachita's first hit of the contest came in the bottom of the seventh, when Ty Owens doubled to center field. Victor Draijer singled later in the inning to score Owens and cut the deficit to 4-1. Arkansas at Monticello scored two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth, however, to secure the eight-run victory.
In game two, the Tigers took the early lead, as a double down the left field line by Justin Weigle allowed Chandler Blake to score from second in the bottom of the first inning. The Weevils responded with one run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly, but Ouachita took the lead back on a single up the middle by Blake in the bottom-half of the inning.
Arkansas at Monticello took its first lead of the contest in the top of the third, scoring three runs on four hits. The Weevils recorded three straight doubles in the inning, until Reed struck out the final batter with UAM leading 4-2.
In the bottom of the third, Will Wallace led off with a double off the right field wall and later advanced the third on a wild pitch. A single by Austin White scored Wallace, and then a single by Dillon Groves allowed White to tie the score, 4-4. The single was Groves first hit of his Ouachita career.
After no runs were scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, the teams went into an extra innings with the score remaining 4-4. The Weevils scored two runs in the top of the eight, however, to take a 6-4 lead.
Back-to-back singles by White and Groves led off the bottom of the eighth inning, and a sacrifice fly from J.D. Speed pulled the Tigers within one run. Two ground balls ended the game, however, as the Weevils recorded consecutive force-outs at second base.
Reed pitched the full eight innings for the Tigers but suffered the loss. His 11 strikeouts are a career-high.
Ouachita will return to action on Tuesday, March 29, as the Tigers travel to Conway to take on Hendrix College. The midweek contest is scheduled for 6 p.m.
