Ouachita baseball splits doubleheader with ECU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Ouachita baseball split a doubleheader with the East Central Tigers on Saturday, winning the first game, 8-1, but falling in the second, 3-2. ECU took the series after defeating Ouachita on Friday. John Franklin Matros earned his first win of the season in the first game on Saturday.

Matros led Ouachita (5-11, 3-5 GAC) for 6.1 innings in the first game of the day. East Central (3-14, 2-4 GAC) was held to just one run, and Matros recorded four strikeouts.

The Tigers' offense came alive early, as a double by Will Wallace in the bottom of the first put Ouachita ahead, 1-0. In the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back triples by Aaron Studdard and Ty Owens brought in two more runs for Ouachita.

In the top of the seventh, ECU gained runners on first and second before Jacob May stepped on the mound to replace Matros. An ground out to second base by East Central allowed one run to score, but May forced a pop up on the next at bat to escape the inning and leave two runners on base.

Ouachita built on its lead with five runs in the eighth inning, starting with an RBI-walk by Jakahari Howell. Justin Weigle then followed with a double to score two more runs, and a single by Wallace put the Tigers ahead 8-1.

In the top of the ninth, May forced the final batter to pop out to third base, earning his first save of the season and giving Ouachita the victory. May went 2.2 innings for the Tigers, allowing no runs and striking out one.

Wallace led the Tigers with three hits and three runs batted in during the contest, followed by Weigle with two hits and two RBI.

In the second game, East Central struck first with a run in the top of the first. Ouachita answered, however, with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Kyle Alexander.

ECU took the lead again in the top of the seventh, but once again, Ouachita tied the score with a run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Ouachita left three runners on base in the inning, though, sending the seven-inning contest into extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning, East Central took its third lead on a two-out single. Weigle led off the bottom-half of the inning with a walk, but three consecutive outs ended the game with ECU ahead, 3-2.

Connor Reed started on the mound for the Tigers but was replaced after eight innings. In the ninth, Josh Reeves pitched the first two-thirds, and Brian Krikorian recorded the final out for Ouachita. Reed gave up just one earned run in the game while striking out nine.

Ouachita will remain at home for its next contest, as the Tigers host Henderson State on Tuesday, March 8. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
