Tigers hold off Reddies to take season series

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - A four-run sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie and helped the Ouachita Tigers earn a 9-7 win over Henderson State in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday night. The win also gave Ouachita the 3-1 season series advantage over their ravine rivals. Kate Lacina drove in four runs for Ouachita, three coming off a homerun over the center field wall in the sixth.

The Tigers were blanked in game one by a final of 12-0. Ouachita managed only four hits in the game, three singles and a double. Sarah Johnson, Daniella Brantley and Delaney Bono all went 1-2 in the game, with Bono's hit being the double. Lacina hit a single in her only plate appearance as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers had not been held scoreless in a game since March 26, when they lost 1-0 to Arkansas-Monticello. Prior to Game 1, the Tigers had averaged 6.7 runs per game since the one-run loss.

In game two, the Tigers were trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the third. Kelly Powell led the inning off with a walk and promptly stole second. Macy Nantz followed with a walk of her own. Daniella Brantley tied the game 2-2 on a single back up the middle, scoring Powell and pinch-runner Chelsea Wilson. A misplay  by the Reddie center fielder allowed Brantley to advance to third on the hit. Kate Lacina singled home Brantley to put the Tigers up one. Alex Jennings launched a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall, scoring Lacina. The five-run inning had the Tigers leading 5-2.

The Reddies scored three runs over the next two innings to tie the game 5-5. With the game tied in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers answered the challenge. After loading the bases with no outs, Sarah Johnson singled home Suzie Gresham to retake the lead. Up 6-5 with two on and two outs, Kate Lacina blasted a 2-2 pitch over the wall in straight-away center to clear the bases and give the Tigers the four-run advantage.

Henderson State scored two with one out in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-7 game with only one out. Marissa Butler entered the game with runners on first and third. She retired the next two Reddie batters to clinch the series and picked up her first save of the year.

Gabby Gonzalez earned the win for the Tigers in Game 2. She went 2.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits. Halley Ryburn got the start went four innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits.
