ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - For the second time in three games, Ouachita Tiger
Lakee Westbrook had an opportunity to steal away a victory at the buzzer. This time, the jumper in the paint fell off the front of the rim in overtime and the Tigers fell to #16 Arkansas Monticello by a final of 94-93. Westbrook finished with a game-high and career-high 34 points. Four other Tigers finished the game scoring in double figures. The loss drops Ouachita 8-6 overall and 6-4 in GAC play.
Down early to UAM, Westbrook's first three of the game tied it up at 7-7 with just 16 minutes to play in the first half. Both teams exchanged shots through a first half that saw the score tied nine times and had six lead changes. With 7:08 left to play int he half, UAM opened up a 10-0 run and led 35-25 at the 5:53 mark. A 9-2 answer by Ouachita cut the Weevils lead to three. The run was capped off by another three from Westbrook, his fourth of the half. Two threes by UAM's Karim Mawuenyega extended the Weevils lead and they entered halftime up 48-41.
Ouachita opened the second half with a 17-4 run. Ouachita's
Isaiah Harper and
Jontavis Willis accounted for 15 of the Tigers' points during the run and gave them a 58-52 lead with 13:38 to play. Willis' jumper in the paint at the 11:43 mark extended the lead to 11. The Weevils responded and began to chip away at the Tiger lead. With 5:25 to play, UAM's Tyrin Jones sank two free-throws to put UAM back on top, 72-71. Down two with 1:53 to play in regulation, Ouachita's
Justin McCleary drained back-to-back jumpers to put the Tigers back on top, 80-78. Both buckets came off assists by
Jordan Corbitt, who finished with a game-high 12. UAM's Troy Thomas tied it up with 15 seconds to play. The Tigers had two shots to win it in regulation but couldn't get the rock to fall and both teams headed overtime tied 80-80.
In overtime, UAM made of 5-6 field goal attempts, while Ouachita hit 5-10. With 25 seconds left to play, Ouachita's Harper pulled down an offensive board, one of 17 for the Tigers in the game, and got the put-back to fall, giving the Tigers a 93-91 lead with 20 seconds to play. UAM answered when Cobe Gooby knocked down a three-pointer, his first of the game, to take a one-point lead. The Tigers moved quickly down the court and with time running out, Westbrook was able to shake free of a defender and get off a shot at the buzzer, but the ball fell off the front of the rim, giving the win to UAM.
The Tigers will travel to Magnolia on Saturday to face the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas University. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
