Tigers win overtime thriller against Southwestern Oklahoma

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Ouachita Baptist University outscored Southwestern Oklahoma State 19-9 in overtime to pick-up the 97-87 victory on Saturday evening.

"It was a hard fought game," Ouachita Baptist head men's basketball coach Dennis Nutt said. "We didn't do a good job of guarding Beauregard tonight. We had some leads that I thought we could extend on, but he always brought them back."

The game was tied at 78-78 with 31 seconds remaining in the second half. Ouachita (11-8, 7-6 GAC) broke the huddle with a chance to win the game. The Tigers methodically worked down both the shot and game clocks, but then the unthinkable happened.

Devin Pugh stole the ball away from Trey Harris (Little Rock, Ark.) and threw the ball down court to Charles Beauregard. Beauregard released the ball and it went through the basket as the backboard lights came on and the Southwestern Oklahoma (3-16, 1-12 GAC) bench erupted.
Ouachita stayed calm and collected though as the officials waved the shot off and ruled that the game would be going into overtime.

Mahlon Martin (Little Rock, Ark.) made sure that the Tigers would win the game in overtime. Martin connected on back-to-back-to-back three pointers to start out the overtime period and the Tigers sailed to victory.

The win for the Tigers gives them just there third winning streak of the season and there first since November 30th.

Ouachita started out the game by dominating the paint, as they raced out to a 7-2 lead over Southwestern Oklahoma. The Dawgs countered quickly though with an 8-2 run capped off by Beauregard's first three-pointer of the night.

The rest of the half the two teams stayed within striking distance of one another, neither wanting to yield an inch. The Tigers held a 42-37 edge at halftime in large part to their stingy defense. Ouachita held Southwestern Oklahoma to 45 percent shooting from the field and 35 percent from beyond the arch.

Pugh lead the Dawgs with 12 first half points, while Beauregard added another 10 points. Wesley Franklin (Frisco, Texas) continued his dominating presence in the paint with 13 first half points.

Three point baskets by Harris and Kendarious Smith (Canton, Miss.) helped the Tigers run out to an eight-point advantage over the Dawgs. Then it turned into the Beauregard show for the Dawgs. In the second half alone Beauregard dropped 27 points on 9-14 shooting and was 4-7 from beyond the arch.

With 12:55 remaining in the second half Nick Shoemaker connected on a three pointer to pull the Dawgs within a single point. Moments later Beauregard knocked down one of his four three-pointers to give the Dawgs their first lead of the half.

Jordan Corbitt (Frisco, Texas) answered with a three-pointer of his own to give the Tigers a 63-62 advantage. The bucket by Corbitt ignited a 15-5 Tiger run that lasted eight minutes of game time.

Beauregard single-handedly brought the Dawgs back into the game. The junior guard went on an 11-0 run by himself to tie the game up at 78.
The Tigers got the last laugh though as Martin scored 11 of his 16 points in the overtime period to give Ouachita the victory.

Beauregard and Pugh combined to account for 63 of their teams 87 points. Beauregard finished with 41 points and Pugh ended with 22 points.
The Tigers had six players score in double figures. Franklin and Smith each had 18 points in the contest. Martin added 16 points, Isaiah Harper (Little Rock, Ark.) had 12 points, Harris finished with 11 points while Corbitt finished with 10 points.

"It means we are moving the basketball around," Nutt said, "I'm really proud of our free throws lately and we need to keep that up. It gets back to a normal week for us as we look to prepare for a tough road game against Southern Nazarene next Thursday night."

Ouachita will take their winning streak on the road against first place Southern Nazarene who is undefeated in conference play. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
