ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The No. 4 Ouachita Tigers will meet Southern Nazarene for the sixth time ever tomorrow night inside the friendly confines of Cliff Harris Stadium.
Ouachita (7-0) so far this season has outscored opponents 107-15 at home this season and have an impressive 21-5 record since the stadium was renamed to Cliff Harris at the start of the 2014 season. The Tigers are a perfect 10-0 in Thursday night games since the beginning of the 2010 season.
The Tigers have never lost to Southern Nazarene (1-6) in the short history of the series. Ouachita is a perfect 5-0 dating back to the 2013 season. The last time Southern Nazarene ventured into Cliff Harris Stadium the Tigers throttled them 41-14. Ouachita raced out to a 27-0 halftime lead and never looked back as
Shun'cee Thomas (Bossier City, La.) led the team with 149 rushing yards.
Drew Harris (Benton, Ark.) led the team in touchdowns scored with three.
Last season the Tigers almost overlooked the Crimson Storm having lost to Harding on homecoming the weekend prior. Southern Nazarene at one point held a 14-7 advantage over the Tigers in the second quarter.
Cole Antley (Atlanta, Ga.) nailed a 42-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining in the half to close the lead to 14-10. The Tiger defense buckled down in the second half as they shut down the Crimson Storm offense. Antley kicked his second field goal of the night to make it a one-point contest going into the final quarter of play. With 6:35 remaining in the game
Austin Warford hit Harris for a 67-yard touchdown pass as Ouachita escaped Bethany with a 21-14 victory.
Ouachita is coming off a 58-21 drubbing of Oklahoma Baptist, the Tigers ran all over the Bison for 454 yards. Junior running back
Brockton Brown (Sheridan, Ark.) had a career game running for 187 yards in the contest and three touchdowns in the first half. Brown set a school record for rushing yards in a quarter with 169 and easily won the Great American Conference Offensive Player of the Week award.
The Ouachita passing attack was also in sync against Oklahoma Baptist.
Brayden Brazeal (England, Ark.),
Caleb Sallisbury (Van Buren, Ark.) and Harris combined to go a perfect 11-for-11 in the game. Brazeal and Harris each had touchdown throws in the contest. Seven different players ran the ball for the Tigers and eight different players caught the ball in an offense that seemed to click in every facet of the game.
The Tiger defense once again completely dominated their opponent from start to finish.
Airric Parker (San Diego, Calif.) currently leads the defense with 44 tackles and linebacker
Jon Johnson (Haskell, Ark.) is close on his heels with 42 tackles.
Keandre Evans (Junction City, Ark.) is the leader of the secondary with four interceptions and nine pass breakups. As a unit the Tiger defense has intercepted 14 passes and batted down 32 pass attempts. Ouachita currently ranks first in the nation in passing efficiency defense, the Tigers rank second in the nation in turnover margin at 1.71 and have held opponents to just 10.9 points per contest.
The 21-points that Oklahoma Baptist scored last week were the most given up by the Tigers defense since the opening week against Northwestern Oklahoma State. At home this season, Ouachita has yet to give up more than one touchdown in a game as they look to continue that streak against Southern Nazarene.
The Crimson Storm enter Thursday's matchup having lost five consecutive matches in Great American Conference play. Last week Southern Nazarene lost to Arkansas-Monticello 35-12 after the defense gave up a season high 425 yards of total offense to the Boll Weevil's. Southern Nazarene is last in the conference in several statistical categories including scoring offense. The Crimson Storm currently average just 13 points per contest and Southern Nazarene ranks last in the conference in total offense with just 199 yards per game.
The Crimson Storm have only scored 17 or more points on one occasion this year and that was a 45-20 win over East Central in week two. The Tigers know they need to be careful with this opponent though, two weeks ago Southern Nazarene almost stunned Southern Arkansas in Magnolia, Ark.
On the offensive side of the ball the Ouachita defense will be looking to slow down quarterbacks Jacob Spady and Gage Porter. Spady leads the team in rushing yards with 286 and passing yards with 238. Porter is second on the team with 229 rushing yards and 239 passing yards. Porter has also accounted for the most touchdowns on the team with four on the season.
The Tigers offense will try to slow down the pass rush of the Crimson Storm. Myles Roll leads the Crimson Storm defense with 62 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks on the season. Josh Jordan and Trenton Smith each have 42 tackles on the season, with Smith leading the team in interceptions with two.
Ouachita will be looking to win their eighth consecutive night game dating back to last season. The Tigers and the Crimson Storm will kick-off tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in Cliff Harris Stadium.
